Report from a cousin regarding Tesla FSD

Full self driving mode with Tesla is insane. First time having my car drive 100% on its own from highway thru neighborhood to home. Stops, turns, even a slow driver in front that the Tesla decided to move around, shot over to side lane then got in front and maneuvered back to speed lane. Crazy :-) experience. Will take some getting used to but very cool, you have too it a lot of trust into the car in busy intersections.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Just to clarify, you had FSD since you bought the car, right? So I guess this improvement is due to the recent upgrade of the FSD software. They just did the FSD Beta wide release. I think that's what you just got.

Yea, I had done a lot of earlier self driving, mostly freeways or straight shots but never actuated the upgrade to the full beta release. Finally signed the release statement and ...WOW, big difference. The full beta is full, 100%, point to point self driving.

Awesome! Yeah FSD before was separate highway and city streets. Now combined, one unified software. Heard it's pretty impressive. This is real next level Al neural net tech. No one else doing this.Tesla actually trying to create artificial visual cortex to do visual object recognition. They intend to "cut and paste" this onto multiple vehicles and machines, including humanoid robots.

I was blown away when the car decided on its own to go around the slower driver in front, pretty ballsy.

Ha, ha... yeah, that's funny. think you can set the "aggressiveness" of FSD.

I'll need to look that up and tone it way down, it didn't really do anything unsafe, but was definitely in middle finger mode.

Lol. Nice. Software is going to continue to get better as more people activate FSD Beta, and more data comes in to m train the system. At some point it will become statistically better than a human driver (if not already).

Yes, you can adjust the aggressiveness for maneuvers and following distance.
FSD Beta is remarkable.
The amazing thing is that it is not limited to where things have been hyper-mapped like many of the others. The only thing that depends on maps is the actual GPS navigation for the route.

99.999% of the time it is like described above.

The other 0.001% is the hard part.

And keep in mind this is all being done with cameras. No radar, lidar or ultrasonics. Just like a human driver.

Not bad when you consider human drivers f it up more like .05% of the time...

Thats going to be the interesting part - how much better does a robot need to be than a human? Its pretty clear we'll hear about each and every FSD accident even if its safer than a human driver.

This also highlights the difference in approaches between the various manufacturers.

For example it was pointed out recently that Mercedes achieved full autonomous Level 3 driving, but it was limited to a very narrow set of situations, specifically only on portions of the German Autobahn (a limited access freeway like our Interstate).

Contrast this with Tesla which is trying to solve the much harder problem of fully autonomous driving in all environments, and is not even trying to expend resources on the regulatory efforts to certify its system in a narrow application.

It’s interesting to note though for all practical purposes Tesla’s Level 2 system is more capable than Mercedes Level 3 system.

Still has problems with stationary objects?

E.g. vehicle stopped in road, vehicle crossing perpendicular to direction of travel?

Not particularly so. It's significantly better than a regular human at this kind of avoidance. Perhaps someone can respond with more detail.

Other than stubbornness, what would ne the reasoning to not use radar or lidar in *addition to the camera/gps systems?

Hurts like a bastid...

Tesla does not ascribe to stubbornness. The current automotive radars (at the time Tesla decided to exclude them) didn't add any more relevant or usefull information to the data stream than what the cameras provided already. Therefore Tesla dispensed with them.

Thanks for posting. Amazing to read.
Any idea how well it works in the harder situations? At sunset with sun in your eyes? Or murky badly lit or no light) roads? Rainy conditions? Just curious.

I am hesitant to trust a car to auto-pilot when they can't even park themselves.

I think its fair to consider parking a separate skill from driving.
