rowing machine recommendation?

does any have a less expensive rowing machine that they like.
Don't need the bells, whistles, TV, bluetooth social connect or any other nonsense. Just something to get muscle tone back to usable.
Something under $500.
I've read good of Sunny and this one and Yosuda. Prefer magnetic.

Sorry, I've been—quite happily—using a ConceptII for over ten years. I had to declare it when I brought it in from the US to Canada. When I told the guard I had a rowing machine to declare, he immediately asked, "A ConceptII?"

My memory is that he was so impressed, he let me pass without having to pay duty. (I could be mis-remembering that part, though.)

Three or four more years (knock on wood), I hope to fulfill my lifetime goal of virtually rowing around the world (40-million meters). I just passed 32-million last month. (An extended move this summer meant I didn't have access to the erg. I missed it and am happily reunited.

Wife bought this one, uses it irregularly, seems happy with it:

Probably worthwhile to get coached for a session or two for proper form; it’s harder than it looks.

We decided to rent a Water Rower from the manufacturer a few years ago, which actually worked out great because at the time you couldn't even buy a one new due to the pandemic home workout equipment rush.

We received a lightly used unit, and then decided to buy it out after a year. Wound up saving quite a bit versus new, plus we got to try it out at home first with no obligation to keep it.

This is the one we have- [www.waterrower.com]; it's fairly basic, with only the small screen to show your stats. It looks nice enough to blend into the surrounding furniture when not in use, which TBH is most of the time. But it's easy enough to roll up and out of the way if needed. Sturdy design.

There are add-on units from Ergatta and others that will give you a larger screen with some gamified workouts, but we have not gone down that path, yet.

years ago I had a concept I or II, who remembers.
It was great, but I sold it or gave it away, either from disuse, or cause I thought I'd always be in shape.
That was stoopit.

If you can find one used (or can reconcile with paying for new), a Concept is the way to go.

Either wait to find used or just get the concept II. It’s it and that’s that.

for those with Concept 2 rower experience, does the PM display generation really make a difference?

i'm looking at used with a PM3 rather than the current PM5.

thumbs up.

I'm familiar with the PM4, but the differences may or may not make any difference to you depending on your needs.

The PM3 and PM4 support Log Cards (looks like a credit card) for storing workout history, while the PM5 supports USB Flash drives instead.

Other difference might be in they types of heart rate monitor chest straps that are supported, if that matters to you.

The PM4 supported a rechargeable battery pack that the energy from rowing would recharge, in addition to the ability to use 2 D-Cell batteries instead (PM3 and PM5 only does D-Cell). After about 13 years the rechargeable pack is losing it's ability to hold a charge and it is no longer sold, so it's going to be D-Cells or trying to re-build the rechargeable pack.

And you can buy a PM5 upgrade kit for a rower that shipped with PM3 for about $185 if in the future you feel the need for more features.

Not sure which display I have. It only can use batteries.

The only complaint I can make about the ConceptII is the noise. I listen to audiobooks with an iPod Shuffle and earphones. That works fine. In the same room, I have a recumbent exercise bike (with some built-in speakers). I tried connection the iPod Shuffle to the bike while rowing. The sound from the ConceptII is too loud. I need the earphones.

Pedaling on the exercise bike (with magnetic resistance) is fine with the speakers.

We got the Concept II a few years ago. My daughter uses it in the off-season b/c...well...she rows. The wife and I use it too. Just not as much as the daughter. We all like it bigly.
