I've accepted that I'm mostly incompetent. But I'm lucky.

When I used a typewriter, I could type about 80 wpm with no mistakes. Now I can't type one line without at least a couple of them. I'm too impatient. I see the raggedy grammar and sentence structure even as I type this. But I'm too lazy to do anything about it.

I should probably drink some juice and take a nap.

I remember when a forum member named "insider" endeavored to create a portable Macintosh. A super long time ago. I don't remember if it was supposed to be a clone or if it predated the PowerBook.

I do remember how impressed I was. Not that I needed a portable Macintosh at the time. But that I was blown away that he made the effort so grand and so bold. It's hard to remember the details. Probably ran into too many obstacles.

But with so many notable people in our lives passing away, I'm always impressed with the boldness of their productivity. They have something to leave behind that basically represents their signature on Earth. Even a one-hit-wonder had the one hit. Even a hitless wonder has the song.

We should all leave our signatures.

My dad was a very important person in a very small town in Wisconsin. I all too often compare what I have accomplished with what he accomplished, knowing full well that our skills and opportunities are completely different.

no doubt. but it is all so ephemeral. nothing lasts forever, of that I'm sure.

I remember insider from the DM forum. When I found out about/joined MRF in 2016, I fully expected to find him here. Maybe he is, just under a different name, as others have done.

You strike me as superbly competent, that is if we are to overlook your propensity for aligning with losing NBA teams.

Then again, how many people one affects is a poor measure.

If you make a difference to one or two, I don't think that has less significance than affecting more. There is no "official" tally.

I totally follow the "Butterfly Effect".

If you have people-even one-who appreciate you for yourself; if you leave a positive impact on society; if you are happy in your own skin, then you are competent.

I am of the opinion that you make your own luck in this world. Be positive. Have concrete goals. Don't waver from those goals. Work to make them a reality.

Just follow these simple rules and you won't believe how lucky you'll be!

And don't forget, viz, that this forum is appreciative of you, so right there you're that much farther ahead!

You're the conscience of the forum and I'm sure this applies to the rest of your life. Isn't that enough?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Wednesday was a strange day for me. Over the course of the day, four different work colleagues told me something to the effect of “I’ve learned so much from you!” Most of them I hardly ever interact with. It was a powerful reminder that we often impact people in ways we might not even realize.

Then I arrived home to find in my mailbox a postcard from Japan addressed to… Zac Efron. A strange day, indeed.

It is what it is.

Say hi to Zac for me!

I've often had several occasions of competency.

When congratulated on pulling off some accomplishment, my response was either 'I have my moments' or 'When you're lucky, you don't have to be good'.

But generally training and practice deserve the accolades, but I won't lie — Luck has been a lady a few times, and I don't take her for granted.
