i am doing my 2023 retirement funds rebalancing.

in vanguard alone, my wife and i each have four separate accounts (non retirement/ira roth/ira/inherited ira).

we sorta/kinda have a core four in our roth: (short term bond/large cap value/midcap/international). the percentages vary.

but the other three accounts hold some of the above plus various etfs, a NYS muni bond fund, a tech etf, a health care etf, a reit etf.

we also hold one mutual fund in both schwab and fidelity.

we also have access to a pension plan where we have 5 more funds, one being a target date funds.

last year was a tough year.

across the board we were down 11.3%.

it could have been worse.

how many etfs/mutual funds/stocks is enough?

how many are too much?

thumbs up.

Since ETFs and Mutual funds are made up of a basket of securities/bonds it is really hard to say.
I don’t have funds, so my portfolio has to be more diverse.

rgG-

Thanks for the sharing.

I was not thinking about how each etf or mutual owns a basket of stocks.

I was thinking of each etf or mutual fund as one investment vehicle and even a basket of say a dozen stocks and/or bonds as one investment vehicle.

Sorry for any confusion.

Thumbs up.

To be honest, most people are best served by a target date index fund. I tend to aim for the one thats furthest out since retirement is a long ways away AND I don't mind nearly everything being in stocks and very little in bonds.

I have a state funded retirement plan, so that provides living income. Investments are all about gaining wealth and as a cushion against unforeseen problems. Most of that is with a financial planner, who most years earns a lot more than I would on my own or with an indexed fund (which some around here promote). That said, 2022 was a tough year and I am really glad that that I am not depending on that money to live on. To the original question, I am in quite a mix of different investments including annuities.

If you were only down last year 11.3%, you did much, much better than average. According to the Callan Periodic Table for 2022, large cap funds were down 18.1%, fixed income was down 13.0% and Real Estate was down 25.1% Link

I did slightly worse than you, having dumped all my bond funds and switched to multiple short term CD’s

Whatever you’re invested in, I wouldn’t make any big changes.

Big in cash but still holding over a dozen equities in a portfolio that I manage. The larger amount of our retirement is going to have to go into an annuity in a year. But cash is king with over half our assets right now (outside of our home). We’re still down 16.75% in the last year, most of that involving a retirement account from my wife’s work (TIAA).

Her and my Social Security will be far and away our biggest monthly income source once she turns 70 in December of this year.

Like rgG I don't hold any funds, instead having primarily individual stocks, along with annuities, etc. My count puts it at about 20 currently, but that number will go up/down as I make trades, expand my holdings or divest of low-performers.

It's probably too late for that now.

The Fed will eventually stop making these big hikes in interest rates, and that fund's price will recover.

We have nine separate accounts, with thirteen different securities spread amongst those. It was worse before and I've been trying to consolidate these. The reason for so many accounts is that we have each had multiple jobs over the years with multiple different 401ks, 401bs, SEP-IRAs, IRAs, deferred comp plans, etc. Even though I track all these items in a large spreadsheet, I have found this mess of accounts and securities somewhat difficult to manage. Now that we're retired and starting to use some of these funds I've been liquidating the small poorer performing funds to reduce the clutter. I still need to develop a master plan to get the number of items down to a more manageable level.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
