What to do with a squirrelly scroll wheel?

This is my third using two different type verticals mice. All are USB and initially respond well. After a time they get jittery and suddenly instead of just responding to a down or even up scroll, I get a two or three page jump.

It's pretty constant across different platforms and irritating to say the least.

I've swapped from Logitech (twice) to Newlaxy and the squirrel persists. Is this perhaps a software issue or something I will never understand? Still on OS10.10.5 (if it's not broke don't fix it)

Sounds like a software issue. Step one is to upgrade the OS since you use the internet. I don’t think Apple is supporting anything older than OSX 10.15.x

RgrF.

I think it is a software issue and not hardware. I had a similar problem on an earlier OS (now on Ventura OS 13). It's been a while so I don't remember the exact cure. I think it was an incremental update.

You can always try Safe Boot then a normal Reboot. You can try re-installing the OS.

Are you sure it is a scrolling problem and not a jittery cursor that is jumping all over? It may be triggered by scrolling, but if you are jumping to different pages, that sounds like a cursor problem. You might try Google for both problems and see what you like for answers.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

Some Logitech mice have two acceleration modes that you can switch between by pressing down on the scroll wheel until it "clicks." It may be that you're inadvertently triggering this.

Not sure about Newlaxy.

If you're confident that it's the OS, try this:

Thanks for all the responses and info.

The OS the iMac and myself are all a bit long in the tooth. From OS 6.0.8 days I couldn't wait to learn what I could absorb and upgrade at every opportunity, these days I'm more inclined to run out the string and not ask for trouble. Thus the Yosemite and coasting with a 27" 2011.

If not for the eyestrain I'd probably just retreat to the iPad with its Zaggboard so guess I'll byte the bullet and see how far I can upgrade this old fella without driving myself nuts.

Doesn't your beast run out at Sierra, or High Sierra, anyway?
IOW, you don't have too many upticks to travel before getting new Mac hardware.
Good luck.... and have lotsa fun!
