I'd like to get a new(er) computer at work. My G4 is starting to show its age. However, since the co. JUST upgraded me to CS2 last year, chances are i won't get a CS upgrade until CS4 or 5 comes out. So I was wondering if i should even consider an Intel mac. i need lots of ram and dual monitor support. i was thinking an older G5 maybe. I use Photoshop, InDesign, illustrator, Dreamweaver and Fireworks primarily. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fit a new flat panel display in there too. Maybe a nice Dell. I just wanted to get an idea of what it would cost before i present my recommendation. Opinions or suggestions?

A Mac Pro will run the CS2 apps just fine. Just get the baseline, Quad 2.66GHz model and add another 4GB of RAM from a third party reseller and you're set.

I don't think the typical used or refurbed PowerMac G5 is a great bargain at all, and the PowerPC really represents the past. Just about the only scenario in which I'd recommend getting a PowerMac G5 would be if you're running After Effects and don't plan on upgrading to the forthcoming Universal version any time soon.

If you're sure the company isn't going to upgrade you to CS3 anytime soon, then I'd suggest looking at Apple's refurbed G5s.

I had CS2 on my MacBook duo and while startup times were very long it was faster than my dual 1.25 G4 desktop with 1.75 GB ram. I just got CS3 and it starts much much faster on MacBook. I haven't had long enough to compare speed much with CS2 on G4 but am very satisfied. I would go with an Intel Mac (iMac or MacPro) for the future of Adobe and other software. In other words, lean forward all the way. As a side note, I backup the grandkids DVDs with MacTheRipper and get much better rip times (under 50 minutes) than others on this forum get with their G5s (4 to 8 hours). read thread
