Canon DSLR photogs: I'm too lazy to look for an answer to this question:

I'd like to think it's that I'm too busy, but the 2-3 hours of free time I have each night I tend to want to vegetate or chill with friends.

What's my best option for using a software program to review images as they're captured with a Canon 1D tied to a PowerBook with firewire?

I'd like to set up in the studio with the 1D shooting RAW files, tied to the PowerBook running an external 20" monitor so I don't have to worry about downloading CF cards and all.

Will Lightroom do it, what about Aperature? I have both of them, any others I should consider? I'm doing a full-day shoot for one of my best friends (she owns an adult boutique, BTW! So shooting her very cute girls in sexy, skimpy lingerie was hard to turn down).

Thanks,
~A

edit: I hope being honest about being too lazy doesn't mean everyone will tell me to "shove it" and figure the answer out myself.

I'm in the bay area, so I should probably swing over there to help you.

Canon's own software has a camera control component that will allow usb (not sure about firewire) access and control of your camera while being tethered to a computer.

Hard to turn down eh?

The FW can be tethered using the FW on the 1D model with Canon's software. test it out before you get there to shoot though if you have an intel mac.

I know I have the Canon software, but I know I didn't put it on the PBook (which is not Intel BTW). Sounds like that's my best bet.

I will certainly let you all know how it turns out, maybe even put some of the good shots online (of course you'll be able to see them all at her website too)! ;)

Thanks for the tips, and you can believe I'll be testing it all out as this is not at all the type of freelance photography assignments I take!

Do you really need to look at raw images? It could slow you down

I'd shoot raw + small jpeg and then you can use anything you like to review images.

I use my Nikonview 5 software because it is so straight and simple to view jpgs but anything would work even folders in Column View with Preview to pop em open.

Have fun and be sure to get some... good pictures that is.

Second the RAW + small jpeg shooting. Have been using iView for ages - it does the job for reviewing shots/. (won't be upgrading for a long time, if ever - it's gotten too expensive lately....)

RAW vs. RAW + jpeg shouldn't make a difference since I'm connected via FW. I don't care about reviewing them it's so my friend can review what we're shooting and give some direction on what she wants for her website and such. Being connected to the laptop means I get to save it all straight to the hard drive.

You need the latest version of the Canon software (available from the Canon site)and the lastest OS X update.

Anything earlier and it doesn't run.

Test it before the shoot.

Ditto on the RAW + JPEG.
