where do I sell some computers these days?

I have an 16" i9 MacBook pro for sale here but no one seems interested.

I tried to list it on Craigs List and I have the draft pending, but the text message to confirm the phone number never arrives. I think CL is not good these days, is it?

I heard of Mercari but I never used it. Should I give that a try?

I also know about FaceBook Marketplace, but I don't have a FaceBook account. Wife has one, although we never bought or sold anything there. Should I try to sell from her account, or should I make an account? I really don't want a FaceBook account.

That leaves be with eBay. Yes, I used to sell random stuff on eBay long time ago. I have not sold anything in 10+ years. I guess I can give it a try.

Anything else that I missed? I'd like to sell local (CL, FaceBook Market Place) to avoid shipping, and meet with the buyer at the police station and get cash. I don't ask much, I was thinking about $800.

if I do eBay, I am afraid someone will swap it and send back a bad unit and claim that I tried to scam them. How do I avoid that scam?

FB Marketplace is the only thing I'd bother with for a cash-only local sale at this point. In my area, Craigslist is a shadow of its former self (unfortunately).

Otherwise, eBay.

Swappa has been good for me with phones and they now handle laptops.

Ok I heard of Swappa but I never knew they handle laptops. How do they prevent fraud?

Swappa is a user-to-user marketplace for buying and selling new and gently used technology. Buyers and sellers connect directly and all devices must be fully functional to be sold or listed on Swappa. Swappa employs a customer service team that reviews listed devices to ensure they meet this requirement.

Facebook and Craigslist work for me when I can't find buyers on this forum. Get some thick skin thought, a bunch of people will offer you $500 for a quick sale.

Another vote for Swappa. I've only had one sale, an iPhone 6, and bought several phones and watches over the last five years with no problems. I expect I'll use it again.

Where do we get the best price for much older Macs? A circa 2000 iBook, for example, or a 2004 cheese-grater G5?

Mercari is similar to eBay. Buyer pays Mercari, you ship the item, Mercari pays you. Mercari takes a similar 13% cut. Advantage of Mercari is that buyers only have 3 days after receiving the item before the sale becomes final (which may cut down on buyer's remorse nonsense claims). "Local" sales are still "shipped" via an Uber/Grubhub like delivery service. Disadvantages of Mercari are the probably smaller market and their weird take on shipping insurance (they only insure shipments up to $250, I believe), and if you want to self-ship (i.e. to get more insurance), you have to offer free shipping. There's no calculated shipping option for self-shipping.

Sadly, there's no good way to protect yourself from return scams on eBay or Mercari. I would trust eBay's customer service more than Mercari's to be helpful in the event of a return scam (if either of them are even going to be helpful). As a buyer on Mercari, I had a weird/annoying customer service outcome when the shipping got messed up.

If you want to stick with the cash/local meet options, you can also check out OfferUp. It's a "hybrid" model, allowing you to do local cash transactions, or have the option for shipping and paying OfferUp a transaction fee.

And, if you're on Nextdoor (local neighborhood app), that's another option (they have a classified section).

One good thing about FB Marketplace (last I looked) if you want to do a shipping option, their fee is less than half of the other sites.

For local options, it seems like FB Marketplace is taking over. I haven't gotten into it since I don't really use FB, but when I've looked (as a buyer), I just hate it so much because the search options are just so terrible. If what I want isn't listed, just tell me that, don't show me hundreds of items that really have nothing to do with my specific search!

Thanks Jamie, I submitted the quote. I am now waiting for the confirmation and shipping label, if approved.

BTW, I logged out of iCloud, I erased this Mac, and it is activated and it is at the setup screen. I can'
t find a way to shut it down. I can close the lid, I guess it goes to sleep, but there is no way to shut it down completely, is it? there is no such menu on that splash screen.

You just have to force it to shut down by holding the power button until it shuts off.

I haven't used the latest hardware/software in a few years, but CMD-Q used to bring up a shutdown dialog box in previous OSes

I guess any face-to-face transaction with a stranger can be risky. Facebook Marketplace certainly has some risk potential. Within the past 10 days, an off-duty NYPD cop (who probably should have known better) went to buy a car in the evening from a "seller" who had listed it on FB Marketplace.

It was a setup, as it turned out. The cop had even taken his brother in law with him, but ended up being shot during the robbery attempt.

Another option could be the Low End Mac Swap list... (I think you join the group and sign in )

It's based on Google Groups and I forgot how I signed up but I still get emails to my Gmail account.

Forum member Clay lists things on their from time to time so he may have more insight on how to sell there.

It's not just for old crap er... vintage equipment - looks like somebody posted a M1 Macbook Air on there today?

Also there is a vintage Apple Reddit - not sure if they allow buying or selling but I see guys getting excited about Macs that I would consider door stops or Boat anchors as one of my old Windoze buddies used to call them.
