An attempted carjacking in the parking lot of a Silver Spring grocery store was thwarted by the suspect’s inability to drive a stick shift, according to police.

On Monday, the victim was approached by a man at the Safeway in the 900 block of Thayer Avenue in downtown Silver Spring, according to detectives from the Montgomery County police’s major crimes division. The man displayed a knife and demanded the car keys from the victim, who complied.

Unable to drive because it was a manual transmission, the suspect then left the vehicle and ran away.

Aloha, Ken

“I have developed significant attachments to several members even though I wouldn't recognize them if I sat next to one on a park bench. I'm often tempted when in an airport to walk around, hollering "The Løpe", to see if anyone other than the Homeland Security people will acknowledge me. ” - The Løpe

“Human rights can only be assured among a virtuous people. The general government ... can never be in danger of degenerating into a monarchy, an oligarchy, an aristocracy, or any other despotic or oppressive form, so long as there shall remain any virtue in the body of the people.” — George Washington

“Public virtue cannot exist in a nation without private virtue, and public virtue is the only foundation of republics.” — John Adams

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” — Benjamin Franklin

"Every single terrible thing you see on Facebook — be it some sort of horrible right wing nonsense or a confusing and annoying product decision — is made in pursuit of growth. Every bit of damage that Meta has caused to the world has been either an act of ignorance or deliberate harm, at many times tweaking the product to make it harder or more annoying to use so that you will log onto Facebook or Instagram multiple times a day and spend as much time on there as possible." Only north america has this problem. Few cars elsewhere have automatic transmissions. Probably because fuel is much more expensive elsewhere.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I know years ago a manual got better MPG, but Is that really still the case as automatics have improved. Here's the EPA MPGs for the 2022 Nissan Versa with Automatic and Manual, and the manual is 5 MPG WORSE than the auto in both city and highway.

And going forward into EVs, the manual is probably DOA.

Yeah, the only EVs that will have a 'manual' are fakes that want to mimic the sound and feel of a manual ICE car (I think there is some talk about doing this though).

OTOH there was one car theft where the thief just left it in first gear as they ran from the police.

Wonder if the owner's insurance company covered a new engine?

I used to champion my old manual, but when I moved to Pittsburgh with its stops on hills and city traffic, the shine wore off. Next car was an automatic, and I haven't missed the manual--well, except that satisfying run up the gears pulling onto the open freeway.

OK, there are cars with manual transmission in the US, but none that I would actually want to buy at this stage in my life.

I think my next car will be a Tesla without Full Self Driving software.
