I am watching a STUPID SciFi movie on HBO and the action is supposed to happen in 2021... and they have CRT TVs.

On Apple TV's Severance series (science fiction), the monitors are CRTs. I've been pondering why this is.

Looking for the scary numbers.

Thanks - I thought there must be a logical reason. Those CRTs look right at home in that environment.

And also much of the tech is retro as well. I’ve wondered about that.

Well, we can be pretty sure Ron DeSantis isn't using one.

When I bought my first HDTV fifteen years ago I was able to find a home for the 25" GE console TV that my parents originally had bought nearly 30 years prior.

"June 1980" was on a sticker on the back of the console model & it still worked just fine.

I still have and use 2. A 20” Phillips that is used for video games and a 240 pound monster 34” Sony VEGA widescreen HD TV from 2002.

Best damn TV picture EVER! I have repaired it once already and have some extra parts on hand in case it suffers a similar failure in the future.

One of my clients has a large CRT TV. It still works and I cam see why she doesn’t feel like moving it.

My little 15" Proton that I bought from Crazy Eddie in 1985 or thereabouts lived on until at least a couple of years afte`r Hurricane Sandy. It still had a nice color picture when I took it to e-recycling. I felt bad leaving it there.

I recently put a small CRT TV (19 or 20 inch) for curb bulk pick up.

Last one is a massive 32 inch CRT - that is a two man job to move. That thing weighs a ton. Need to find a buddy and treat to pizza and beer.

Years back when I put a couple that I had stored in basement for recycling (but eventually went curbside) - I put out in the evening but next day noticed the back busted up - I think the magnets on the back of the picture tube have (or used to have) value as scrap?

Circuit boards too?

Hey, I asked this over a decade ago..... cool smiley

We still have a 27" Panasonic Tau flatscreen CRT. Ultimate old school retro-gamer's wet dream CRT. It's used regularly in the second bedroom because we're too lazy to sell it.... probably an easy $350+ fetch. Got it just before HDTV went live after old Mits, and less old JVC CRT's died. Actually bought a Samsung CRT at BB after lusting for the (then too expensive) Panny, but turned out shelf tag on Sammy was wrong, and jack pack noted thereon was for the Canadian model, not USA. Returned Sammy and got open box Panny + extended warranty + >$40 gift card in exchange. Mr. & Mrs. Richie McRich had bought the Panny Tau a couple of hours after I bought the Sammy, but it turned out the Panny was a hair too big to fit into their bedroom A/V entertainment armoire.... perfect timing, as Panny had not yet been logged back into BB's system.

BTW, the other 27", and the 32" CRT's I alluded to in the old, linked thread were hand me up TV's I bought for my mother in the 1990's; first was the 27" (Toshiba) to replace the ancient 25" RCA console from the 1970's that finally fritzed out. Turned out the Toshiba had "issues" that weren't satisfactorily resolved after a couple of factory service house calls, so I bought her the 32" (Costco special) to replace it, and we schlepped the 27" back to L.A. w/ us. Made arrangements to take the 27" into an authorized service center, and they were able to fix it up better than new. When mom died in '04, we then schlepped the 32" back to L.A. and upgraded Baby Buzz's Mario & Duck Hunt home from 20" to the 32" from his grandma.

Kinda wish I had repaired the 27" Samsung HDTV CRT that I had for a while (for retro gaming), although emulators seem to do a good enough job on pixel based screens, at least for my taste.

I prefere CRT colors to the LCD/OLED screens. I know, I'm a dinosaur. Perhaps it's just conditioning, but I think it looks more "filmic."

we had a CRT until 4 or 5 years ago. Ha!

Oh, when you think you're ready
Go down to Crazy Eddie
He's the one who's got the lowest prices around.
And so the story's told
throughout the whole wide world —
Crazy Eddie will not be undersold!

I missed that thread back then. Look at the last poster in there:

pleasebringbackcrttv

That person, whoever he/she is, made only 1 post. And about 9 months after the thread was posted. I wonder why would someone register, pick a post 9 month old buried hundreds of pages back (remember, people were posting a lot back then) and then never come post anything since then.

About seven of them in my basement, plus a few spares.

Of course, they're all in vintage arcade games, so I guess this is not exactly the answer you were looking for...
