1- don’t live in a poorly made building
2- get the heck outside ASAP.

I still remember waking up outside my apartment at about 4 AM. Then I realized I had felt the earthquake (4 on the Richter) and had just run outside before waking up.

1- most people cannot afford that.
2- if you experience a 7.x Earthquake (I did, 3 times), you realize there is often no time to do that. In fact I know cases where people ran to get out and the stairwell collapsed, while those who stayed inside survived.

2. This is the opposite of advice given by earthquake safety authorities because people often get killed or injured trying to rush outside. In almost all cases you should shelter in place until all shaking stops and then carefully evacuate to an open area. The most common injury during nighttime earthquakes is slashed feet cut on broken glass.

The last big quake here in LA came about in mid-morning 4AM or so. The 6.8 was located less than a half mile from our house and lasted long enough to not only wake us but make it virtually impossible to get out of our waterbed.

Once I did I raced (don't ask where I was going) to the front of the bedroom and collided with and went face first over an upturned dresser, after righting myself I ran toward the kitchen and gas jets (it's truly amazing how a life threatening emergency can hone thinking)

It was a holiday, MLK day. Next action was out in the street, racing up and down in my underwear, seizing on tools and shutting off neighbors gas feeds wife remembers me leaving her behind in that H2O bed and returning home not remembering much of it or the aftermath or the bleeding shins.
