Just finished my taxes! TaxAct Online. Joy!

Many endorphins released upon completion. Nice refund coming - not too big or too small. Life is good. Next year no more procrastination.

TaxAct worked fine for me. With all the paperwork lined up it took about an hour.

I've used both MacInTax and TaxCut in the past. All work fine, but I'll stick with online from now on.

I've done my federal and one of my two states-- the other of the two isn't due for another month, but I'll probably do it this weekend anyway. I did NOT use any of the online filing options, for two reasons:

1) I'm still not sure I'm thrilled with the idea of some third-party company (TaxAct, etc.) having all my financial info

2) It seems like the move is to go online, and in the process, to either collect your information and/or to charge you something. (And not cheaply, I might add-- H&R wants $25-35 for online filing.) Well, some of us luddites will still prefer having things in paper form, and refuse to pay additional, for something that ought to be free.

So... instead what I did was download the *free* H&R software, and use it to print out a paper return for the federal, then do the state by hand.

I have a friend who is a CPA and only charges me $100 to do my return. The past couple years I did some freelancing so had to file a schedule C and this year was my first full year working from home so I had all kinds of home office, mileage and other expenses to deal with.

He really helped keep me organized and reminded me of some deductions I would have never remembered or thought of in the first place. My receipt filing and record keeping will be much more thorough this year so I won't have to wait so long to file next year. smiling smiley

Well worth the $100 I pay him.

I agree TAXACT online (free and free filing) was smooth and painless. Rather than paying a preparer each year, why don't some of you just go in an try it, without sending in the form. See how easy it is and compare the final results with what your preparer conjured up?
