DeWalt Ni-Mh batts dying
Posted by: Fritz
Date: March 17, 2023 02:04PM
my decade or older DeWalt 14.4 Ni-Mh batts are reaching their end of life.
There are many 3rd party replacements at Bezos house of stuff I don't need. Vanon seems the most popular.
All seem to drain faster, but I'm not building a house.

Anyone have experience buying the after market NiMh batts for their cordless device? Or should I be thinking buying OEM at 4x the price?
I'm not getting involved in a rebuild kit. I have enough to rebuild already.

I bought a pair of higher-voltage-with-adapter batteries for mine, Work just fine for my unprofessional home repair needs.

Does DeWalt make a backwards-compatible 14.4 Lithium battery (like Ryobi does with their 18v line)? I wouldn't bother with Ni-Mh batteries unless they were the only available option.

On rebuilding batteries...

Of the three basic battery — NiCad, NiMH, and Li-Ion, are different charges needed for each type?

I'm pretty sure one can't charge a NiCad battery with a NiMH or Li-Ion charger, but I don't know about the remaining two.

I've got a couple Ryobie 18+ NiCads that I wouldn't mind (I think) rebuilding to use with my old and new Ryobi stuff, keeping the NiCad charger, of course.

Or I could HazMat them and just watch sales for a couple more batteries.

Don't think so, especially since the current Li-Ion line is 12V.

It depends. Some of the newer chargers will be backwards compatible with the older batteries, so you just have to research each situation.

Generally, yes. Some battery chargers will do all three, they have circuitry built in to detect and supply the correct charging currents and voltages. It is more common for a charger to support NiCad and NiMH as the battery chemistries are similar and some batteries can use a similar charging curve for slow charging. Fast charging is a different situation.

You might keep track of Home Depot's daily specials. Back in the fall I bought a daily special of a 2 Ah, 4 Ah, and 6 Ah High Performance batteries, a charger and a (rather useless) bag for $150. Turns out the High Performance batteries do seem to last longer between chargers for my regular Ryobi tools.

I have Ryobi and Milwaukee cordless tool families.

As a Ryobi user who started with some of the "blue" tools and "yellow" NiCad battery packs, please take my advice and do not waste 2 seconds thinking about rebuilding NiCad. You'll have to buy a new charger for Ryobi's Lithium batteries (which still fit the old 18v tools) but it is more than night and day difference.

I've been using some aftermarket Ryobi batteries with no problems at all.

I'll give that a try.

In the past it was waiting for Ryobi Days.

While I don't need another charger, your score is reasonable to me.

Done.

I've got a NiCad and the newer Li-Ion charger along with a couple of NiMH and Li-Ion batteries.

It just seemed a shame to send those NiCads to HazMat Hell, but as I recall NiCads did take much longer to charge, and the there's the 'memory' effect.

So, 'no' to rebuilding.

Thank you, all.

What, or how many tools would the battery be running? If it’s just one tool, like a drill, start over on a different platform. The difference with brushless tools and Li-On will not be subtle, even for causal use.

Consider a used tool that can take modern batteries? I think the delta for a new replacement platform would be something like a $35 Amazon setup of unknown brand vs about $100 for something from a name brand you’ll be able to find batteries for later.

But here’s the thing: If you rarely need it, even the $35 complete kit you’ll throw away will probably perform at least as well as your old DeWalt. Or buying into anything new from the name brands will carry you many years to come.

In cases like these, I recommend corded tools.

Cordless is great if you use it often, or away from the house, or in positions where it's inconvenient to have a power cord.

But if you use it once in a while, would a power cord bother you that much? you'd never have to worry about batteries and it would last forever.

pretty sure a new corded drill would be more expensive than ~$35 for 2 new NiMh batts for the DeWalt.
Plus I have gotten used to cordless.
And although the drill is a decade old, it still packs a punch even with the tired batts, just not for very long.
Just like me.

Yes, quite true. I think we've forgotten about things that we used to get along with and now cannot for some reasons.
