We got YoutubeTV multiview

I'd read that this was happening but it appeared on our TV today. Then Google sent me this email:

We’ve picked you to try out our latest feature

Get excited! You’re one of the select few who get to experience multiview. Watch up to 4 March Madness® games at the same time, on 1 TV screen.* Look for live multiview streams in your Top Picks for You section when you open the YouTube TV app on your TV.

The games come up in a grid and, of course, all are playing. I can select any given game to go to in full size. Going "back" returns to the grid. I'm looking forward to this when we (probably) subscribe to the NFL Sunday Ticket. The problem is that my bedroom TV is too small. I'll either have to go to the big TV in the playroom or go shopping for a honking big tv for the bedroom!

Congrats on being "selected." I was too. We must be an elite group of millions.wink smiley

It works pretty well, but hopefully it will improve. Perhaps they really are testing this and rolling it out to a subset of their subscribers.

I do like that backing out of one of the games returns you to the menu. That's intuitive. But the audio lag when switching the source in the grid (a few seconds) is disappointing. You can actually see a spinning indicator that it is loading. And when you switch to an individual game via the grid, the audio level is noticeably reduced. A small thing, but not as seamless as it could be.

These are minor complaints, but I did a free trial of Fubo a year ago at this time, and their multi grid was better. Theirs was user-selectable so you could choose whatever channels you wanted, and the audio switching and navigating between selections was instantaneous. I was really impressed by how well it worked.

Unfortunately, Fubo didn't have all of the Turner Networks, so this was a dealbreaker for the NCAA tournament. I switched to YouTube TV and didn't look back, but overall I think I liked Fubo's interface better. It was more polished and more intuitive. But I don't think I'd ever want to give up YouTube's unlimited recording.

I'm sure that depends on your bandwidth. But they're not broadcasting in 4k are they?

We were also selected...I don't think I have watched a March Madness game in my life. Why would I want to watch 4 at once?

Might not be for you, but you have to appreciate how far we've come.

I remember trying to follow a sweet 16 game in ~1990, and they didn't even have a ticker. It's not like the tourney was any less of a big deal back then, but if your game of choice wasn't being shown in your region, your were SOL.

With no internet, the only way to get an update was to tune into the twice an hour update on CNN Headlline News. Or maybe call Sportsphone. What a crappy time to be a sports fan.
