As the Wikipedia article explains, and the video shows, the truck cab ends up just being thrown upright onto the ground, a unit undistorted by the impact. The driver just opens his door and steps out.

How?

the driver moved the truck only a few metres forward in order to avoid a direct impact to its cab,

he could have backed off.

Or continued forward through the gate ahead of him, it was designed to be pushed through easily. What the short clip on twitter doesn't show is that he had been stopped for a bit over the tracks. If h had just kept moving it is likely that the collision would not have occurred at all.

I've been tempted to quick drive across when the train is like a quarter mile away.

Couplea years ago my funeral director relative mentioned how bad an idea that is and how the last one they did it was a shovel and bag operation to gather the remains.

I wondered about that.

The article said he stopped when the arm dropped and that the arm would give even with a motorcycle motorbike driving into it.

Not that he would/should know that, but if I were on the tracks with a train approaching, I'd just gun it and not even consider any design factors.

Even with high speed passenger trains, the signals and arms activate a minute or so before the train passes.

That should have been plenty of time to back up or drive forward.

Three people dead, others injured, the drive lost a leg?

Eight years is a little kind, in my book.

That was my first thought.

He earned a longer sentence. He got off lightly.
