WTH Apple?!

I've never allowed my photos to be uploaded to iCloud, and have that turned off on all my devices.

In checking iCloud.com because of some spurious login requests, I see all my photos are in iCloud.

When I tried to deleted them iCloud says 'Fine, we'll take them of all your devices'.

I want them on my phone and iPad, but not in iCloud.

Checking settings on one of my iPads and my 'Phone, I see that Sharing is turned On in the 'Phone.

I haven't checked my iPP yet.

This has to be from a recent update because I would never have toggled it On myself.

Is there anyway to delete them from iCloud and not lose them on my 'Phone?

I think I got it under control.

They're being synced to my 'Phone as my 'Phone says not all the photos in iCloud are on my 'Phone.

I probably pruned them from my 'Phone and I'll have to do it again.

Then I'll Trash the photos in iCloud.

But I can't find a select all on the phone to trash them from iCloud.

Good you’re on your way!
I understand that if iCloud is turned off for photos, all images would be erased but the ones that were taken with the camera off the device.
Still, I’d make a backup first.
FWIW, I’m on my third iPhone and iPad, and always perform updates ASAP, and I’ve never had Apple activate the feature.
I should probably read this link and turn it on already… I’m on the 200gb for the HomeKit cameras anyway.

It looks like I'm dead in the water.

In order to download the photos from iCloud, I had to turn on Sync to iCloud or whatever because iCloud all the pic here aren't on your phone.

I have no way of knowing which of several hundred pics those are, so I turned on Sync, and that took pics off my phone and sent pics down to my phone.

Then I turned off Sync and clicked Disable and I thought that was it.

I knew that deleted pic go to a Recently Deleted space, so it seemed like it would be easy to go there on my Mac and delete them permanently more or less, but no.

The mass of pics aren't in Recently Deleted, just two that I deleted earlier.

And I couldn't even delete them.

They could be selected, but the Trash was greyed out.

There was no Select All in iCloud.

At one point there's a notification on the Photos icon (I think) that says there's 30day to get all the pics downloaded, and I guess that means Apple dumbs them a month after I want them to!

They Apple says something about final deletion could take up to 40 days.

WTActualF!

I've got a headache.

It would be nice if Apple enabled a peer to peer sync between your devices without going through the ’Cloud.

What would be nice is for Apple's installers to stop enabling things that were explicitly turned off. About every other update I do on my iPhone I find some items turned back on. I notice when the battery runs down faster.

Once you delete a photo in iCloud, you can go to the Recently Deleted screen and delete it immediately manually. Screw that “could take up to 40 days” BS.

It is what it is.

The one that bugs me is that I have to turn off location data and cellular data for nearly every app all over again after every OS update.

...And for Apple Music every couple of weeks.

I hope I’m not being obnoxious, but once again, my preferences tend to stick.
I wonder what is it that I’m doing right.

Hope you haven't jinxed yourself by saying that.

I have not much more than the standard apps on my iPhone Xr. I set some apps to not connect using cellular or when on battery, and that is about it. But every so often I find one turned back on and sucking the battery life down. And then there was the time a setting changed and started loading compatible apps that I had on my iPad to the phone as well. None of which I wanted on my iPhone.

This right here highlights why I've never started using iCloud for photos intentionally, and why when I've unintentionally done it on a number of devices over the years (until the free 5GB was filled) I've panicked disabling it.

Apple ought to explicitly state that existing pics taken ON THE DEVICE will not be touched and provide a link with greater detail about what's going to happen.

I've never used iCloud for image backup and of course I run some risk of losing stuff if my phone goes belly up, but I do transfer images to a computer periodically using Photo Transfer App. I'm limiting the content that relies on any Apple backup/sync system to stuff like Contacts, Messages, etc.

Up until recently I never used iCloud for anything. But updating my Apple ID a couple weeks ago managed to turn that on and now I have to go through steps to disable that again.
