Photo site DPreview.com to shut down April 10

I am in a state of shock. I don't participate in the forums but I do like DPreview's setup and ease of accessing information about cameras. I am particularly shocked because parent company is Amazon.com. Eventually the content will not be available.
It will be the loss of a great resource. I am not sure why they can't sell the site off or spin the company off.

[static.slickdealscdn.com]

Dear readers,

After nearly 25 years of operation, DPReview will be closing in the near future. This difficult decision is part of the annual operating plan review that our parent company shared earlier this year.

The site will remain active until April 10, and the editorial team is still working on reviews and looking forward to delivering some of our best-ever content.

Everyone on our staff was a reader and fan of DPReview before working here, and we’re grateful for the communities that formed around the site.

Thank you for your support over the years, and we hope you’ll join us in the coming weeks as we celebrate this journey.

Sincerely,

Scott Everett
General Manager - DPReview.com

As I said in another thread, you'd think Amazon could at least keep the site up indefinitely in "locked" mode (no more forums or new user comments). It's a vast amount of content to disappear from the web.

For @#$%& sake!

In a way, I'm not surprised that Amazon would cut it. Tech is a little silly right now.

Even if the team finds a way to stay together, mostly, thats a goldmine of content to leave behind.

Something similar has happened in the cycling world. Expect a gofundme sort of thing to bootstrap the next phase.

There has got to be some way to save this site isn't there? I don't know how much profit margin Amazon expects but dpreview has a large and steady audience. Just a complete shutdown of this resource seems crazy to me. Sell it.

I'm sure there is, and it seems like a company like amazon should be able to make a reasonable transition. You would think there'd be enough people with the knowhow who care.

There's people who specialize in this sort of thing.

Maybe this is weird. Because I’m more or less sure I’ve never once clicked over to DPReview. But this news still guts me.

Photography was my passion back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It was the love and work I found right at that time I went from boy to man. The work I’ve still got “go to” stories about.

And I remember the countless hours poring over every photo magazine I could get my hands on. Dreaming of equipment, lusting after cameras and lenses and motor drives and tripods. Being a Canon guy or a Pentax guy or a Nikon guy (everybody was a Nikon guy in their heart) or a Hasselblad snob (who only got to hate on Leica snobs).

Knowing the specs by heart.

Years after I had stopped shooting, even I had heard (more than a few times) that DPReview was the new place to be. And that always brought the memories flooding back. Put the sound of a tripping shutter in my ear. Rekindled, just a little, the thought/hope that just maybe, someday, of returning ‘home’.

And from its reputation alone, I know DPReview would have been the best place I never got to hang out. big grin smiley

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

If I remember correctly, the guy that started DP preview was the guy that ran the Power Computing forum. That's where I researched my PCC purchase and also heard about a great website that pointed to great macs deals on the internet: dealmac.

Press Release:

AMAZON.COM ACQUIRES DPREVIEW.COM -- May 14, 2007

Leading online retailer Amazon.com today announced it has acquired www.dpreview.com, the web’s most comprehensive site for digital camera information and reviews. Founded in 1998 by Phil Askey, dpreview.com provides unbiased reviews and original content regarding the latest in digital cameras, and offers a host of features and forums designed to make it easy for consumers to find the camera that’s right for them. With its unique voice and in-depth technical reviews, dpreview.com draws millions of unique visitors each month.

“Dpreview.com is by far the most authoritative source anywhere for straight talk about new digital cameras,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “We at Amazon.com have been their fans for a long time, and we extend a big welcome to the dpreview.com team.”

“One of the difficulties of operating dpreview.com independently has been the balance between producing content and delivering new site features,” said Phil Askey, founder of dpreview.com. “Now, with the support of Amazon, I’ll be able to devote more of my time to expanding and improving our features – such as product reviews and discussion forums while still delivering the high-quality content that our readers have come to expect.”

Dpreview.com offers in-depth reviews of the latest digital cameras and accessories, active discussion forums, digital photography and imaging news, sample images, a dynamic digital camera buyers’ guide, side-by-side comparisons of the most popular models, and the web’s most comprehensive database of digital camera features and specifications.

Dpreview.com will continue to function as a stand-alone operation based in London.

I came here just to see if someone has posted this. No surprise on who posted it.

It's a bummer. When I worked at Amazon I had access to the dpreview source code. They later rebuilt the whole thing. I wouldn't be surprised if it's so tightly coupled with Amazon's infrastructure that it can't be split off.

I know they laid off a bunch of people last year.

Tech is really messed up right now. I'm not a fan of big regulations, but I think there needs to be some serious layoff reform. Right now it's too much "I'm a billionaire and I'm not making enough billions because of my mistakes, so I need to layoff thousands of people to make up for it. My mistake, but I'm punishing you."

Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake are joining PetaPixel.

[petapixel.com]

Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake are joining PetaPixel and will lead its new YouTube Channel. The two have been a mainstay in the photography industry for more than a decade as hosts for first The Camera Store and then DPReview.

Their current home at DPReview is shutting down, but the two have no intention of stopping their excellent video reviews and photography-based content as they will be joining PetaPixel as the faces of its new YouTube channel launching in May, providing a nearly seamless transition from their previous home to their new one.

Can someone pay for the intellectual property and pay Amazon to host the site?

Yeah this is really weird. It's not logical that it wasn't successful enough to exist with other ownership, so my conclusion is that Amazon didn't even try to shop a buyer, in a not-invented-here sort of non-thought process.

Have you heard the rumor that some big tech companies were hiring people just because they didn't want startups/competitors getting them? Tens of thousands of people hired for busywork jobs with long non-competes (one of the reasons that Musk fired so many Twits).

It's just business. A lot of tech companies are losing money lately and Amazon is looking at what it can shed to stop the bleeding. They just announced, what-10,000 layoffs?

Every time I've bought a camera I've gone to DPreview first. It'll be missed unless someone can buy it from Amazon. Maybe they can get it for a good price...

Hey, Larry: Make them an offer!

I read recently that AMZ was laying off 9000 people, so this isn't quite a surprise to me it might have been.

It maybe that none of that directly affects DPReview, but it's being shut down as a result of general belt-tightening.

I do like DPreview's setup and ease of accessing information about cameras.

that was one of my favorite features — the drop down menu that takes one directly to specific parts of a review.

That and the high-res picks of various camera kit.

Still around, parent company had cuts so one assumes they did too. Owned by Outside, Inc.

I think the main problem is we’re seeing cuts after a looong decline in the industry. It will affect the quality of the final product.

---

I'd also like to say that I think I've purchased enough crap from Bezosville to justify keeping DPReview afloat. Perhaps I should have been more careful to purchase toilet paper through affiliate links.
