Cam do attitude?!....GM announces they will end production of the Camaro......

......announced today.....

GM to stop making the Camaro but a successor may be in works

....The Chevrolet Camaro, for decades the dream car of many teenage American males, is going out of production.

General Motors, which sells the brawny muscle car, said Wednesday it will stop making the current generation early next year.

The future of the car, which is raced on NASCAR and other circuits, is a bit murky. GM says another generation may be in the works.

“While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro's story,” Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet, said in a statement.

The current sixth-generation Camaro, introduced in 2016, has done well on the racetrack, but sales have been tailing off in recent years. When the current generation Camaro came out in 2016, Chevrolet sold 72,705 of them. But by the end of 2021 that number fell almost 70% to 21,893. It rebounded a bit last year to 24,652.

GM said last of the 2024 model year of the cars will come off the assembly line in Lansing, Michigan, in January.

Spokesman Trevor Thompkins said he can't say anything more about a future Camaro. “We're not saying anything specific right now,” he said.

If GM revives the Camaro, it almost certainly will be electric, said Stephanie Brinley, an associate director with S&P Global Mobility. “It would be unlikely to see another internal combustion engine vehicle,” she said.

GM has said it plans to sell only electric passenger vehicles worldwide by 2035.

Brinley said the push to sell more electric vehicles makes it likely that all new muscle cars will be powered by batteries. But if there's still a mixed combustion and battery fleet on sale in 2030 or 2040, some gas-powered muscle cars could survive.

Thompkins said GM has an understanding with auto-racing sanctioning bodies that the sixth-generation car can continue racing. GM will have parts available and the Camaro body will stay on the race track, he said........

Are they gonna make an electric station wagon and call it the "Camaro Citation"?

The Camaro is actually a compelling car, but I wouldn't buy it unless it looked like something other than a Camaro. I would say boomers are slowing down, so it's probably not selling as well. Plus it's not an SUV.

The Camaro retro Camaro design is getting long in the tooth, and boomers are dying off.

And the Camaro doesn't compete anywhere near in speed with Chrysler, Ford, and Dodge offerings.

The latter three aren't being bought in big numbers by boomers, anyway.

If Chevy offered a Hi-Po version, sales would be significantly better.

But they haven't/wouldn't because that's Firebird and Corvette territory.

455hp is probably enough for most people, but if not, they have a version with 650hp. Even the turbo 4 can be ordered with the 1le package which makes it actually trackable, so that's pretty cool.

probably true now

they reportedly gave the engineers free reign to design the highest performing car they could within a reasonable selling price

The next iteration of the Camaro will probably look like a Chevy Blazer if the Ford Mustang is any indicator of where things are headed.

Yes, everything has to be an SUV. Modern mystery, there is no adequate explanation. I believe everyone has at least just a little survivalist in them, but it is what it is.

You'll have to buy a used one, or you can just buy a cheap 6-pack of beer and get in a fight, and that should get 'er dun.

Point taken.

I haven't paid attention to Camaro engine options for awhile.

Any of the above options would help get me to work on time, if I still worked.

But the Camaro doesn't have the cachet of any of the other vehicles I mentioned.

It pretty much lost that after the Hugger style, around '74-ish.

It talked the talk to a minor degree, but didn't walk, let alone run.

The body style from '82 on was dreadful, until the retro reimagining.

Even then the first one or two iterations needed some style tweaking, and eventually they turned into Transformer toys.

That feels to me to be a catch-up move, and probably too late.

Tell someone you've got a Hellcat, and you get knowing nods and grins.

Tell someone you've got a Camaro ZL1 and more often than not I bet you'd get a ::blank stare::

If I'm honest, I probably wouldn't know a ZL1 if I saw it on the street, as opposed to a Hellcat.

As it is, I seldom see any Camaro in the wild, but plenty of Chargers, many of them Hellcats, and I hear them all the time.

I'm a little sad to see the marque go, but I don't think the Camaro is going out on a high note.

But then few cars do.

It could be worse, I suppose.

It could come back as a minivan, Z/2.8.

I don't like "muscle cars" at all, but the Chevy LS engines are arguably the best production engine ever made, so the Camaro really does have a lot going for it, technically. There's just no market for it. Looking at the specs, the turbo 4 performs almost identically to a BMW 230i, so if it looked more like one, I wouldn't mind having it. Plus, reviewers say it has the feel of a european sports car (unlike the mustang), so it's got that going for it too. I'm not sure why the Mustang sells so well, but it's also a good car. Probably better looking, but I don't like it either, so how would I know.

Ummm… of course sales are down. Worldwide pandemic and subsequent supply chain issues, anyone? ALL car model sales are down!

It is what it is.
