Dick Van Dyke Crashed Car Into Gate in Malibu, Suffered Minor Injuries, Officials Say

.....Dick Van Dyke suffered cuts to his face and a potential concussion when he crashed into a gate last week in Malibu, police say.

The 97-year-old “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” actor was treated at the scene for abrasions to his nose and mouth but declined further treatment and was released, according to officials.

Van Dyke was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the crash, which happened Wednesday, March 15, but was picked up and did not drive away.

Van Dyke, who has more than 80 acting, writing and producing credits spanning a 65-year career, starred in “Mary Poppins” (1964), “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” (1968) and the “Dick Van Dyke Show,” which ran for 158 episodes from 1961-1966.

TMZ first reported news of Van Dyke’s crash.

The crash comes nine years after another more serious vehicular incident for Van Dyke that happened on the nearby 101 interstate. In August 2013, Van Dyke sports car caught on fire on the side of the road and caused two lanes of the busy highway to be closed.

Van Dyke escaped from that scary incident without injury.

............yikes.........more than tripping over an ottoman........?!

My mom voluntarily gave up her license around that age. It was a relief to the family. It can be hard as people see it as giving up their independence. I can fully understand that, but it is a safety issue not just for the person, but others as well.

Should be mandatory testing after 65 or 70, but it'll never happen because older population are the biggest voting bloc.

The news is full of people younger than 65 doing stupid things in vehicles. But we give them a license at 16 with a hearty "Good luck!" then ignore their driving skills until they crumple a fender in a Safeway parking lot at the age of 83, then its "TAKE THE KEYS!"

sorry, man, I have to call bullshitt on this. while I agree that the minimum should be increased slightly, the fact remains that many older folks cannot control something mechanical, like an auto, with the same dexterity and strength that they should have.

while I'm a huge critic of people using their phones while driving (including CarPlay, Android, etc) this is a physically deleterious problem.

Wasn't this latest accident in the rain?

If so hard to see how he'd be at-fault.

There are 80-year-olds that would put many of to shame and 60-year-olds that shouldn't drive an electric shopping cart. So it all depends on the individual.

Rolls Royces are pretty big boats to maneuver, especially through a gate.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.
