I’m less than 2 miles from the Columbia River, as the drone flies, but the spot of the sighting is more like 12 miles away. Oregon Fish and Wildlife twitter feed says the wolverine was about 360 yards from the city limits. That would have to near Blue Lake. We have our annual company picnic out there every year. I’ve been tramping around out in that area a few times, birding. How cool would that be?

Wolverines are scavengers, and they're very smart and sociable. They do have some wicked teeth, useful for ripping the flesh off off large animals that others have brought down.

There are no documented wolverine attacks on humans.

When domesticated, they tend to attach themselves to a single human (much like cats) and are shy around others, but they seldom bite or scratch so long as they're kept well fed. They can be taken out on a leash/harness like a dog. They are still considered wild animals, so treating them as pets is unlawful in most places. (They have strong scent glands, so it's best not to have them in your home, anyway.) Unlike other wild animals (looking at YOU wolves and raccoons), tamed wolverines don't get violent when they grow up.

They were exploited and almost driven to extinction for their fur, which is especially soft and water-retardant. Only the fact that other animals with soft fur are cheaper to feed kept them from becoming synonymous with fur coats like mink.

It's nice that they're coming back.
