New Mini in the House!

It arrived at the Apple Store about a week earlier than promised.

2023 Mini, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD.

It is blazing fast and overcomes a few glitches that were developing in my Late 2012 Intel i5 Mini.

I took the afternoon setting it up and doing file migration from my old Intel mini. I was stymied for a bit for lack of a second monitor, but then I remembered my old Cinema Display from the PPC era and that I had an adapter from HDMI.

I ended up using Migration Assistant with my Time Machine backup. Migrating from the old Mini over Ethernet didn't want to work.

I am keeping the Intel Mini running as a guest computer. Maybe I will take it apart and install that SSD and maybe I won't.

I am disappointed that a large number of my apps won't run on Apple Silicon and that for some of them the developers have moved on and they are essentially dead.

I was prompted to download something called Rosetta to help with Intel apps but that doesn't seem to help much.

I had to download an older version of Firefox for Mac and replace my newer version with it and then Firefox worked. I assume it will now update automatically.

I hadn't noticed there was no card reader, but I have a USB one so I can overcome that. When I get my dock that should take care of it.

Now I have to get one of those Thunderbolt docking stations that match the form factor and spend about $150 on software updates.

There seem to be 2 different Thunderbolt docks but the one that holds two SSDs has some bad reviews on Amazon. Any advice on that topic? I guess the Samsung SSDS are the fastest.

Thank you for your patience.

for a good crazy laugh, go and edit some video on a free video editor, like DaVinci Resolve.

That’s a sweet machine, enjoy!
Late 2012, you’re making quite a jump. You’re a brave man, doing a migration.
Good on getting a 2nd monitor running.

… and that for some of them the developers have moved on and they are essentially dead.

That would give me cue, and decide to dump them too.

I had to download an older version of Firefox for Mac and replace my newer version with it
Maybe you have an incompatible extension, and maybe there’s an updated version.
I just read somewhere that not using Safari negates the benefits of improved security, to each their own.

Money spent on software updates is hard to swallow, but a good investment if the software is still needed.
I’d keep in mind that thunderbolt is only justified with displays, high end video equipment, and ultra performance drives.
Otherwise, usb 3-whatever is enough for a multitude of ports. devices are usually slow.
There are forum members that are on top of drive speeds and protocols, hopefully you’ll get good advise.
Good luck!!

That's the configuration I would get. I'm in no hurry, though, because my 2012 2.6GHz quad i7 mini (also a 16GB/512GB SSD configuration) is still doing fine.

Mine chokes and overheats with too much demand on graphics/video.

Migrating from the old Mini over Ethernet didn't want to work.

Interesting, I had the same issue with my 2018 mini migrating to 2023 mini pro. I ended up migrating over thunderbolt (faster anyway, but took me a while to locate the right cable).

I could see that. Graphics was not the strong suit of those older minis. I use my mini as a light duty machine when I don't want to burn as much electricity; browsing and Hulu-type stuff. For heavy lifting I use my Mac Pro. The mini seems to handle video just fine and doesn't get too hot with Hulu, Peacock, etc. streaming, although a couple weeks ago I streamed a basketball game from ESPN and after the 2+ hours the mini was running at about 84C. I usually use SMC Fan Control to keep the fan running slightly higher than default.

The Apple silicon machines yawn at any video you throw at them.
