Dumb question about bank/cc requests for income info
Posted by: ka jowct

I ignore requests from financial entities to provide them with income info, in part because I don't have an exact answer. Would it be the gross income from my federal return? Adjusted?

It is whatever number you want to give them. It is just used to help set your credit limit.

And you have no obligation to respond.

I ignore them, too.

I am mainly asking because if I apply for an Apple Card, I need to supply a number. Technically there is income that I don't touch, like RMDs.

For something like that, if they don't explicitly ask for net or gross income, use the gross income, and you may be able to pad that a bit. (See the links below.)

If it’s Deutche Bank I tell them $1M. Otherwise I tell them the truth: $8500 in a good year.

Six!

If needed for an actual application, sure, but otherwise, none of their business.

That's been my approach.

One CC issuer is threatening to reduce my credit limit because I haven't disclosed my income and also I don't spend much money with it (sounds like BS to me). I never carry a balance on the card, which is probably their main complaint. At one time, ages ago, it was worth having for the air miles it earned with a certain airline, but they changed the terms years ago so that it's pretty much useless for that purpose, plus I don't fly with that airline, plus I may never get one a plane again. I'm tempted to ditch that one.
