horrible.

this is not meant in jest, but after thinking about the families of the victims, my mind turned to the killer & what might have driven him to commit such a heinous act...

I Don't Like Mondays

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload.
And nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's going to make them stay at home.
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was as good as gold.
And he can see no reason
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?

Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
Tell me why?
I don't like Mondays.
I want to shoot
The whole day down.

This sort of thing is so senseless and horrible that I usually end up thinking of Kurt Vonnegut's "bad chemicals" explanation as making as much sense as anything.

Such a sad thing to have happened.

I'm about two hours from Blacksburg.

So many Tech student parents here. Not much work getting accomplished today.

My sister and many here at work went there. Many others have kids there. Not everyone has checked in yet.

It's horrible. And the numbers seem to keep going up.

Good grief! The first time I spotted a brief mention if it, there was one death being reported. Then I spotted something else that said 2. When I saw the title of this thread, I thought someone's finger had stuttered, and then I noticed how quickly the toll was rising. How horrible, and how terrifying for anyone who has connections to the campus, especially those who have friends and loved ones they haven't heard from.

I'll just ask how does society say these people were supposed to defend themselves?

It's sad that people die from non-provoked attacks. Be it 20+ or just one. The reality is, it can happen, anywhere and everywhere.

Prayers are with the survivors.

The city of Philadelphia has had 111 homicides this year, so far. (as of a couple days ago)
Not as concentrated, or as focused on one age group, but troubling nonetheless.

Imagine living in Iraq, where a daily body count like this is about average. Day in, day out, 24/7/365.

Can't really process this kind of thing. Out of my grasp.

Student on TV says he spoke with another student who was in a classroom and was told everyone in the room was shot but him because he stayed still. Un-fscking believable. Dude was supposedly going down the hall, room by room, shooting into each.

Please tell me you're not saying this tragedy was caused by not enough people being armed.

Our gun laws are among the very LEAST restrictive in the industrialized world, but we have FAR more than our share of these senseless massacres.

i just read this story before coming here. my eyes are teary as i try to explain to my son how limited a parent's power of protection really is. columbine filled me with the same sense of helplessness.

we can tell them not to drink and drive, have safe sex, and be wary of strangers. we can't shield them from a crazed gunman. none of us are safe in that regard.

My god, the numbers are climbing even more?!

Nothing ever justifies anger, or its physical incarnation, destruction. But, life has always manifested this trait. It's an innate response to threatening circumstances. I don't think we can ever eliminate such acts from society, but nevertheless, society is partly responsible.

Let's not turn this into a political debate. I think we can all agree this is a horrible tragedy. Right now, it doesn't matter what caused this. People are dead. Many people are dead. If we need a thread for finger pointing, let's put one in the other board.

So you think your thoughts are worth twice as much as everyone else's? :p

But seriously: gads, this is horrible. 22 dead. That's a lot of senselessly curtailed lives to wrap one's head around, and that one person could be responsible for all that destruction is thoroughly depressing. My thoughts are with their families and the entire Virginia Tech community.

My wife's cousin Doug attends there. He's currently in Europe as part of his semester abroad. He's not in engineering, in any case.

We talked with his dad (wife's uncle), just to see how he's doing. It is hard to comprehend such a terrible tragedy.

A person that works at CNN just passed this along:

My friend in VA is a former EMS, now head of the department, and he sent me this IM on his way out the door......

Him [1:52 PM]: I am on phone now with an ic that was there

Him [1:52 PM]: He is saying they "black tagged" 31 on one floor alone so there will be probably close to 50 if not more DOA....

Him [1:52 PM]: it is gonna be way worse than first reported

I don't think so. Sometimes when I'm taking hard photos, I'm filled with compassion to capture the moment for those pictured, and to help convey the message to others.

Judging from the reaction of the other people in the photo. That person must've just gotten shot 5 seconds before the photo was taken. She looks like she is screaming, bone-chillingly, from the top of her lungs. In that particular situation the photographer chose to stop and stand 10 feet away and start taking photographs of this screaming young woman. He didn't run over to see what happened. He didn't run to get help. He didn't yell for everyone to take cover. He stood there in front of them, composed the photograph and clicked away. That's pretty cold. It's a breath-taking photo though.

But hey... whatever that's just my opinion. Sorry for going off topic.

The victim was shot on-campus by a member of the US National Guard. That's the image people remember, and is, in large part, WHY people remember what Kent State symbolized. An historically important photo, and glad the photographer had more brass than I might've in that situation.

No disagreement there. It's a historic photo. I wonder if there will be any award winning photos of today's massacre sent to news agencies? Surely there must be one student with a camera in his backpack who had the "brass" to take photos of the carnage instead of helping the vicitims and/or running for his life while the massacre was taking place.

I was letting it go, but since you keep pressing it...

What evidence (aka, non-assumptions) do you have that:
- person must've just gotten shot 5 seconds before the photo was taken
- He didn't run over to see what happened
- He didn't run to get help
- He didn't yell for everyone to take cover

As far as we can tell from the photo, the alternative might be:
- person was shot 10 minutes earlier
- the photog already went over and tried to help
- the photog left to call help
- the photog kept reminding people to look out
- the woman showed up and he then took the picture

WHEN is this country going to realise that there is a SIMPLE ANSWER to reduce the number of these sorts of tragedies?

This has very little to do with the political hot potato of "gun control." For the record, I'm not anti-gun but don't own any.

Why can't we simply TIGHTLY REGULATE the SMALL group of guns who's EXCLUSIVE purpose is to kill humans? Not "take away mah gunz," not "outlaw all gunz," just the tiny, tiny, tiny percentage that are inadequate for anything BUT killing large numbers of humans efficiently.

Is that really so out of line? Is that really so wild-eyed, so nuts?

You can still kill humans in a huge variety of ways (including other sorts of guns) if that's what you need to do. But these marauders tend to HUNT humans, and they almost ALWAYS use tools that are designed with ruthless efficiency for that EXACT PURPOSE.

Do you folks (the majority of whom are American) have ANY IDEA how incredibly RARE a tragedy like this outside the US, even in heavily-armed Canada and Russia?

I wonder how many more innocents have to die before this country "gets it."
