If people have the money to buy what they want, they should be able to buy what they want.

Within the law, of course.

I can talk on the phone at 80mph.

Maybe he was serious, maybe he was channelling an MFRer wag.

Neither is it against the law to observe someone being a dick for being judgmental over something so inconsequential.

Being a geologist who spends time off road, I had some interest in that (the $50k 4Xe, not the $114k ridiculous one). However, Car & Driver after testing really panned it. The drivetrain apparently is awful and jerky, only got 16 mpg on a 200 mile trip (because it is horribly inefficient once you get past the 20 mile electric range) and the suspension, steering, noise levels and ride are just as awful as the regular Wranglers. Won't be getting one!

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

If I couldn’t sell it, trade it in, or use it for collateral, I wouldn’t pay $30,000 for it.

Of course. I guess we know who loves him some Jeep Wrangler winking smiley. The Jeep Wrangler is literally the worst vehicle on the road for anything 99.9% of people do in their vehicles. Yes, a used Yugo is better at almost everything. They're not great looking, so it has to be the "Rugged Vibe". If it's that important to have a rugged vibe, go for it. I tend to look down on that kind of thing, but I probably shouldn't.

I'm not dead sure it's inconsequential either, but that's just an opinion.

Hope it comes with 4 flat tires for extra safety.
Jeeps are notorious for their unreliability.
But then so are Range Rovers and I still see lots them round these parts.

If your passive-aggressive BS is aimed at me, I guess we know who doesn't no jack about who 'loves him some Jeep Wrangler.'

I've reacted similarly to idiot remarks of anybody driving a pickup truck that isn't a work vehicle must be compensating, and women who drive SUVs being soccer moms.

I have very little interest in getting a truck although I really like the Ford Lightning, and 0 interest in an SUV.

I really don't get the constant need to stereotype and worry about what other people do, when those actions don't impinge the complainer's lifestyle one iota.

One would think some of this people are lifetime members of IUPAT.

Yeah, I'd probably get a used Toyota Land Cruiser if I had to drive off road a lot.

It seems like you passive-aggressively called someone a dick, so I joked that I must've hit a nerve. I'm not stereotyping anyone, but I do have opinions on cars because I'm somewhat of an enthusiast. Like you said, if it's not against the law, why not?

Consequences to me of people buying enormous vehicles they don't need (and that actually suck) are me breathing the crap that comes out of their tailpipes, fearing for my life on the road when 5-10k. lb. vehicles sway in and out of their lane, etc. etc. But that wasn't really the point.

I just told my wife about this and I agree with what she said where in the hell are these people getting all this money? Be a cold day in hell before I paid $100K for a vehicle even if I had it lying the @#$%& around. I mean PPP money should be run out by now.

It used to be that drivers of BMWs were stereotyped as the most aggressive, entitled drivers, but around here it's jeep drivers by a mile, no other marque comes close.

I read this morning that the average new car costs $48k. Prices are getting crazy and I wonder how most people can afford them. We are considering a car for our youngest daughter and the prices are just jaw dropping.

Yes, people are willing to overpay for the Jeep moniker.

Unless you are literally rock crawling & need its approach/departure angles, there are far better choices, even for barely-there roads.

Even used. It's pretty much a war on average people.

edit: I don't think anything used is a good deal. The best value are cars like a Toyota Corolla , but it's going to be over 20k. If you can't spend that much, you'll get much worse value.

I can beat that. I've had a fiat 500 for 4 yrs. and the only thing that has cost me money is two front tires, which btw means fiat 500's are reliable.

This, an appropriate amount of lift, and the right size wheels/ tires.

COVID-era supply chain issues still plague the industry, although to a far lesser degree than even six months ago. Dealers continue to act as if no headway has been made in this regard, however, and continue to sell at vastly inflated prices. This is going to come back to bite them BADLY when the supply chain gets back to normal - consumers are going to have LONG memories about how badly they treated by dealers these past couple of years.

The other factor driving auto prices upward is the amount of tech that is built into modern vehicles. That stuff ain't free and there's more of it than ever. Stuff that just a few years ago would have been optional is now included in base configurations.

It is what it is.
