Never mind. I told them to go for it, and will consume at least $100 worth of the granola bars and soda they give the customers.

Is that per door or both doors ?

If that's for both I think it's a really good price for someone that is competent to do it -
that is someone that isn't going to screw up your electrical and leave you with door rattles .

My friends shop had some of the most highly regarded installers around (EE degrees or EE students)
and I think they billed out at $50 an hr and that was a couple years ago.

Probably a 3 to 4 hour job for a knowledgeable installer with access to schematics
plus the price of parts but this is mostly a labor job.

Doors are not fun to work on. You generally have to take off a number of trim panels, then once you're inside you have to work around the structure of the door often not being able to see exactly what it is you are trying to do.

I hope you also eat something to un-bind all that.

Perhaps there are complimentary laxatives as well?

That's one of those things that I probably wouldn't bother fixing unless I was rolling in money and it was for my Lamborghini.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I had Car Toys do this conversion on my Toyota RAV4-- ten years ago, and it has performed flawlessly ever since. I am very satisfied!

that is why I hate vehicles loaded with useless options. Especially as the door locks on many vehicles these days don't function normally as manual locks.

What are you talking about?

What do you define as "normally"?

On all cars, you can manually do the lock buttons from the inside. On all doors. Without exception.

And on all cars, at the VERY LEAST you can open the driver's door with a physical key, because it's a normal manual lock.

So WTF are you talking about?

Not on ths one Elmo - we were fiddling with it last night and the inner door lock button *was* also broken (it just wouldn't react when you tried to use it), so that it couldn't be used to lock the door, in or out. I can't explain it, I wasn't there when they pulled the inner panel off, but whatever was broken must have all been tied in together with the electronic bits too.

Broken is one thing. RacerX isn't talking about broken; he's under the drug-induced hallucination that cars are coming with no manual lock buttons of any kind.

no, you moran. If you go out to any Tempo/Topaz with power locks that don't work, the rotational torque necessary to unlock the door is about 10 times more than to rotate the lock cylinder on a vehicle without power locks. Also, the lock "knob" on vehicles with power door lock don't have significant or any flare at the top, or any sort of texture to assist in pulling the shaft up to unlock the door from inside. And the upward pull necessary to open it is about 10x more than the upward force necessary to unlock a manual lock car. I had a '90 Tempo with power door locks, and one not functioning, a '93 tempo with manual everything, and currently the wife has a '94 Topaz with power everything, My '99 Sable has power locks, and the shaft has an amazing amount of drag on a completely smooth polished shaft with no flare or knurling. My '69 Buick GS350 has manual locks, my '72 Skylark Custom droptop has manual locks, and my '71 GSX has power locks. The Buicks use a linear actuator for the solenoid which has no resistance when unpowered. The Fords use a rotary screw actuator which has a great deal of rotational drag when unpowered, and is in-line with the lock knobs. So you are pulling up and rotating the actuator. On the GMs, you are pushing or pulling on the shaft of an unpowered electromagnet, and there is essentially no resistance

So unless you actually have the full breadth of knowledge that covers all makes and models of cars produced in the last 4 decades, @#$%&. Oh, and my ASE certification has a bit to do with my overall auto knowledge.
