Slightly off-topic, but not worth another thread:

I got an email from Starlink the other day. I did not realize how expensive (well, I think) they are:

So, for most people, $120 per month (for d/l between 25 and 220 mbs) plus $600 for the recommended hardware is the cheapest plan?

Yikes!

May make sense if you’re in the boonies with no other options, but otherwise, yikes!

There will be a new CEO figurehead but his tweet said Musk himself will still oversee all the parts of Twitter he has messed up. He will still be a full time troll on Twitter platforming some horrible people.

Hardware is more, but that's less than the basic Comcast plan in my area.

Yikes. Crazy what pricing is like for different markets across the country. I keep getting offers from Comcast for a $25/month internet only option (lowest plan). Of course, they're bleeding from the regional telco that now offers Fiber plans in much of the area (1.2 Gbps @ $80/month). Competition is a good thing.

And that's the introductory price. It can only go up from there.

Somehow I found the pricing back when Starlink was all abuzz, and it seemed this was You're My Only Hope pricing.

I've avoided cable for ~45-50yrs, having only for a year, maybe, way back.

But if I could get internet only for $25/mo, I might do it.

Right now I get Sonic 'net and landline for way too much, but the landline is still useful.

Yeah, it can be crazy. I signed onto Comcast for internet only when I got an offer for $40 a month for 2 years, $10 a month off for auto-payment from an account using paperless billing. Speed initially was 100/5, Comcast has since raised it to 200/10 Mbps.

Competition here came from the town. They created a municipal utility to provide internet service, fiber in the street feeding wireless access points hanging from some of the town owned streetlights. They have since added TV service as well. Only reason I didn't go with the town's service is that my house is in an RF shadow. It sits farther back from the street, and the house between mine and the nearest wireless access point has aluminum siding.

Edit - meant to include that the regular price for Comcast internet is something like $80 for the cheapest plan.

for people who don't have access to broadband otherwise, that is a cost effective option.

I hope she's getting a big signing bonus.

the only reason to put up with Elon is for an extraordinary amount of cash.

Linda Yaccarino, currently an NBC executive, is the chosen one.

That doesn't seem that bad for what you get as far as Star Link. It is more than other providers here, but not that much more, and considering you can get it anywhere... The 50gb mobile seems like a particularly good deal for what it is. A person could live and work on the road while adventuring winking smiley

Starlink is a game changer, and extraordinarily good deal, for those who'd otherwise have to depend on the incumbent satellite providers.

I was somewhat cynical of Musk's plans to hire a CEO for Twitter. Must say though, I am impressed with this choice however. Hopefully it pans out, and Musk will spend less time on Twitter and more on Tesla/SpaceX....but I'm not holding my breath.

Still, this particular choice is tacit admission by Musk that he was clueless on how to run Twitter. Choosing an advertising executive especially flys in the face of all his sh|t talk about the way Twitter was run before. In the end the new CEO may end up reinstating many of the same structures that were in place. Again, all this begs the question, why the f'ck did you spend $44 billion and ungodly amounts of time, to put things back the way they were? What an idiot!

[gizmodo.com]

"There’s just one problem, at least if you’re a nut job: Yaccarino also has a gig at the World Economic Forum.

The WEF is an independent lobbying group that helps giant corporations and countries come together to make even more money on an international stage. If you’re fortunate enough to avoid the dumbest parts of the internet, you might be blissfully unaware that the WEF is also a focal point for conspiracy theorists. "

I wonder how long she will be CEO. What happens when they disagree?

If she's smart, she will just deploy that golden parachute.

And then the law talking people will make a lot of money when Musk refuses to pay.
