got a couple old spinners that I'm pretty sure never had anything but media.
But I'd hate to be wrong.
Don't know of any shredder company in the area that's less then $illy to do the job.
So I was thinking disassemble and put the platters in the trash.
I'd rather not drop them at ecycle even though I doubt anyone would bother.
Other ideas?. Don't want to smash and shoot shards everywhere.

I would open them up, break the platters into a few pieces, and drill a hole in any cache/memory chips on the drive’s controller board. This should protect your data from the casual hacker.

In this case, my understanding is that the only way the platters can be read is to transplant them into a working drive assembly; this will require that most everything be matched to the original device, and the older it is the less likely that this requirement can be met simply because the electronics may not be available. Yes, you can use different parts that do the same thing; the last (and only) time I had anything to do with a hard drive recovery, my understanding was that the parts had to be the same for assurance that the platters could be recovered, and even then, there was no guarantee.

In short, I really don't think anyone could or would go to the time, trouble, and expense of trying to resurrect a dead drive, especially an old dead drive, unless they had to.

Disclaimer: I don't work for any drive recovery company; the above is just my opinion and I can easily be wrong.

Just a thought: do you know anyone at a junkyard with an electromagnet (to pick up the cars ) who would play with them? A strong magnetic field would scramble any data on those dead drives.

I'm pretty sure anyone scavenging data from that drive would be looking for easy picking unless you have state actors interested in your activities in which case you probably wouldn't be asking this question in a public forum.

My point is...anything you do to damage the drive would likely render it uninteresting to malevolent forces.

Or use a torch to heat the platters. High temperature will destroy the magnetic field pattern on the platters.

if the drive won't mount to be wiped just remove the controller board and e-cycle that and the remainder of the drive separately.

Open, Remove disk and magnets.

Sand/grind surface of disk (both sides), and toss them.

Save magnets for other uses.

Save case for scrap metal disposal. Aluminum, copper and brass are worth accumulating for scrap, and it gets them back into use quickly.

Disassemble and use parts:

As said above, save the very powerful magnets; all kinds of workshop/home uses.

The highly mirrored disks/platters can be used for the "drill a 90 degree hole" trick.

The disk/platter bearings are small, but extremely low friction.

It seems like demagnetizing or magnetically corrupting the platters shouldn't be that difficult.

I've never seen one naked, but 'highly polished' and 'mirrored surfaces' should have some use other than target or hammer practice.

And there is the possible issue of sharp sharps, but the discs would likely get broken up more, once in the trash.

Make wind chimes?

Hang them in trees or gardens to ward crop predators?

Hang them in the trees to annoy neighbors with random bright reflections when the sun is out and the wind about?

They have to have more utility, panache, and cachet then AOL CDs.

I open them up. I use the platters to hang in my garden to help keep birds away.
