4/10 for me. 5/8 for everyone else.

Since I'm always waiting on "their" deliverables they need to be driven harder.

I have worked both 5/8 and 4/10 and much prefer the 5/8.

Of course this is doing work that was both physically as well as mentally demanding.

If it was simply an office type job I would probably vote for the 4 tens.

Our college goes 4/10 every summer. It's very popular among the 40 hour staff. Interestingly, they run faculty off who come in on Friday's if they don't get permission from a higher-up. They don't care how many hours faculty work during the academic year but for some reason summers are different.

Cost savings. If the buildings are closed on Fridays you don't need security, custodial, can set the temps higher/lower, etc.

I prefer 8/5 for the longer evenings. So many community/volunteer/sport things meet in the evenings. I’m in two choirs, for example, and all 10s would really cramp rehearsals. When the kids were young, evenings were for sportsball practice.

Generally, I’d choose 4 days of 10 hours; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with Wednesdays off.
That requires only two of those 10-hour-days in a row.

For most people, it'll depend on how much they like their job.

10hrs a day is a long time if one is not happy in their work.

I loved 4/10.

Truth be told, 5/10, with commensurate pay, would have been outstanding.

But 4/10 it was, and it was great.

Teaching in a rural school district, we could have avoided major budget cuts had they had the option of a 4 day school week. We could have seen a 20% reduction in bus transportation costs, and nearly equivalent reductions in utilities use and some savings in support staff.

That said...there is no such thing as a 40 hour work week these days. Our joke in Tahoe is that Friday is the new Saturday and Monday is the new Sunday. The four day weekend is a constant thing in resort areas.

I voted for 4-10 hour days.
I have had 5 -10 hour days schedule almost my whole adult life.
Having a 40 hour work week would be wonderful, but don't think
anyone would pay me what I'm getting now for working 10 hours less.

I’m working 5 10’s much of the time during my current project. I’ve worked 120 hours a week in my youth.

Not worth it.

I try to balance more. Work from home means I’m often working more because I have an idea late and night and work it..

I'm in the boat with DinerDave and cbelt... I've been working 5 10s my entire professional life. I work for myself, so the more I work, the more I earn. The only time this wasn't true was when I was doing chemo for 3 months... I took more time off during that 3 months than the rest of my life probably. I assume I'll do this until my youngest is in done with college (another 10 years), then I'll finally reduce my hours.

Been doing this for the last 29 years. Nines M-Th, 8 hours one Friday, off the next. So you still work 80 hours every two weeks.

My workplace called this RDO (rotating day off), where you could pick which week you wanted the Friday to be. You just had to balance with other people in your department or team such that at least one person would always be available.

We went to 4 days-9.5 hours (from 5-8) during the pandemic for cost savings. After about a year, I think they would have had a revolt if we were returned to 5-8 so they changed it to 4-10s. I like having Fridays available to do appointments that would otherwise require taking time off.

the times in my life where i worked 4/10 were awesome. loved have 3 days off. less of a commute. my thoughts were i'm already there; 2 hours doesn't make that much of a diff.

Until I dropped to 30 hrs/wk (semi retired)

Now it's three 8s and one 6 a week.

Love it.

I agree with filliam and gadje that where possible, most often in cases of employees not self employed, we should be looking to reduce the time in the work week; otherwise we're just exacerbating a rat race. If you get to call your own hours and they're billable, good for you!

I'd prefer 4/10 for the "work 40 hours weekly" requirement that we should be looking to evolve from, and really like the 9 x 9 one off flexibility.

In general, 10/4 sounds good.
16/5 for four years unfortunately had lasting repercussions.

SEVEN 8s one week and 5 or 6 eights the next.

I had seniority so I was off when it mattered most, but good Trade Skilled help was hard to find.

Ten hour days is still 5, 6, or 7 days a week in my line of work.

Overtime is VOLUNTARY.
