Salt and Pepper recommendations?

No, not Salt-N-Peppa.


The Shillings black pepper doesn't seem to register, though I think I use a lot more than I should.

No pepper mills or grinders, I'm all about open and pour.

It's just for routine food, I'm not gourmand.

I've seen tiny round pepper corns which look interesting, but I don't think they'l 'work' well with hotdogs, sausage, etc.

Then there's salt.

Morton's or Leslie's is as elite as I go, though maybe it's time to try some sea salt or something new.

I don't use much salt- I've had a 26oz container of Morton's almost forever and it's only half gone.

It's mainly for hamburgers, hotdogs, fish, but not much.

I get all the sodium I need from processed foods.

But, it might be time for a change, for the sake of change.

Once you go pepper grinder, you'll never go back. It's worth getting muscly wrists!

Kosher salt is what most cooks use. Not sure why, but it's worth a try.

Pre-ground pepper is stale and not even remotely as flavorful as fresh-ground. Get yourself a grinder. It's really no work at all.

Once the peppercorn is cracked (and ground), the aromatic compounds that make it tasty evaporate within a few days. Pre-ground pepper has no flavor.
I respect that you don't want a pepper-mill or have to fool with filling it with peppercorns, but, you won't find any pre-ground with any more or different flavor than you already have -because it doesn't have any "oomph" left.

As for salt - for "finishing", that is, applying at the time of fixin' to eat it, get a box of Mauldon Sea Salt. It's a flaky salt crystals, with some nice trace minerals that gives some flavor other than 'just salt'. Plus, it's coarse enough to have some nice texture on your baked potato (or whatever).

You can definitely get nerdy with salt but I don't think there's a ton of payoff there. The reason why kosher salt is often called for is because it doesn't have iodine which can provide a metallic taste. Sea salt is basically the same.

Yeah, get a pepper grinder. Past that I haven't noticed a difference between different types of pepper.

Amazon has it, so I'll get box, 8oz/$7.

I little pricey but amortized over the years it'll take me to use it, it's fine.

No matter how you package it, you can't go wrong w/ Krinkle Cut, Salt & Fresh Ground Black Pepper.....



But on the serious side, after you get the pepper mill, the world is your oyster; you can score all sorts of peppercorns to put in it...... Pro tip; quite often you can find affordable bottles of peppercorns at places like Ross, Marshall's, Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Nordy's Rack, etc., that'll keep ya going for awhile w/o breaking the bank. So just get the damn pepper mill; you_will_not_regret_it. Paul's rec of Maldon's should not go unheeded. Their regular, and smoked, finishing variants are always in our pantry. Excellent blast of flavor before the food hits your tongue. Less sodium than Morton's/Leslie's is added bonus.

Your sea salt postulate is also better than the plain stuff; and you can find salts from seas all over the globe. There's also your pink (or purple salts from mountains, and/or caves from similarly around the world. They add interesting flavors w/ some sexy minerals captured in their crystals. The beauty of the right salts, and peppers, is that you don't need to bury your food w/ 'em..... a little goes a long way; start slow, you may find that's ample, and that your salt & pepper buck will stretch a long time.

Yet another to consider: a ratchet mill. Fill with the spice you want, and instead of a twisting motion it uses a side-to-side motion. Much easier to use and to refill, especially is you have arthritis in the hand and/or wrist. Much easier! And fresh ground pepper is so much better than the already ground kind, there really is no comparison.

Look in the spice rack, there are small jars of peppercorns with a mill atop the jar (Mccormick I think). That way you can see what the pepper fuss is about without investing in an actual mill. Then you will know if it is worth it.

If you don't grind or like it, then just get whatever preground you want, there really isn't much of a difference in them.

pepper without a grinder isn't pepper.
black is all you need. as others have mentioned, one can get a bunch with a refillable grinder. CostCo IE:

the same can be said for salt.
black, pink, Maldon, lava, smoked ....
you don't have to buy the whole collection, but it will change the way you cook or eat, if you do either.

we use Himalayan black, Morton, Maldon (baking), La Baleine sea (bread baking mostly) & TJs citrus salt.
beezees discount house of salt has plenty to find a few in small quantities at not in$ane price$.

these do make a discernible difference even to the most uninterested palate.

no one's gonna make you explore cooking in the French countryside, or tell you to drink tea with a pinky raised or eat pizza with a knife and fork or drink cork only wines or drink Belgian beer from a tulip glass.

I don’t even use pepper much at all, and that’s what I use.
And yes, I heard you say you were not buying a pepper mill, but this is just buying the peppercorns in a new dispenser

So we know exactly where you're coming from, aside from being an "open & pour guy", do you have any other particular objection to owning/using a pepper grinder?

Back when I used to cook a lot, I had several: One for pepper, one for coriander seeds, one for cumin seeds, and one other that I can't remember what I used it for but there were four in a row on the kitchen shelf. Spices really do taste stronger, fresher, and better when they're freshly ground. Because I am pathologically cheap, all mine were wooden ones from decorative salt & pepper sets, some of which had never even been used before, that I bought at the thrift store.

Ok, the mortal and pestle was brilliant and made me laugh A LOT, Paul.

I wouldn't get used, but would look great in my trophy case because it's great looking.

I was ok with the cylinder/carton of Morton's and the tin of Shillings.

I was happy, care free, and it was cheap.

Now if I get a pepper grinder, then I must have a matching salt dispenser.

I'm looking at, looking at a salt and pepper grinders, mainly because the Force needs balance:

Is there Kosher rock salt?

The Unicorn mill was a consideration for a second, mainly because of the name (LOL), but at $50 and no matching salt version, it's a nonstarter.

And this is the problem.

I'm not a grinder guy!

I get pepper and salt grinders and a I'd have to get cooking stuff.

I'd have to dress different, I'd have to cook different!

I'd have to get spices and foods!

I'd have to get flavors of cooking salts and peppers!

I'd have to improve my kitchen lighting!

I'd have to get new friends friends, I'd have to get cooking friends!

Nah, I'm not ready for it.




Ok maybe I might try simple SnP grinders.

I can stop anytime.

The labels even remove so that they don’t look so cheap. Lol

Also, no one cooks less than I do, so if I have a pepper grinder, you should, too. grinning smiley

My only recommendaton on this (other than, yes - get a pepper mill):
avoid ANY plastic components - they will eventually break.
My current pepper mill is pretty much wood & metal.

Fair enough, I stand corrected on why salt gets iodized. My main point was that non-iodized salt tastes better, at least to me.

  • You can usually find them on sale at your local grocery store.
  • Costco used to carry the gigantic S&P version, but now they only have the salt only version.
  • The Trader Joe's version is very good - don't ask me how I know.

I was ok with the cylinder/carton of Morton's and the tin of Shillings.

I was happy, care free, and it was cheap.

Now if I get a pepper grinder, then I must have a matching salt dispenser.

I'm looking at, looking at a salt and pepper grinders, mainly because the Force needs balance:

Is there Kosher rock salt?

The Unicorn mill was a consideration for a second, mainly because of the name (LOL), but at $50 and no matching salt version, it's a nonstarter.

And this is the problem.

I'm not a grinder guy!

I get pepper and salt grinders and a I'd have to get cooking stuff.

I'd have to dress different, I'd have to cook different!

I'd have to get spices and foods!

I'd have to get flavors of cooking salts and peppers!

I'd have to improve my kitchen lighting!

I'd have to get new friends friends, I'd have to get cooking friends!

Nah, I'm not ready for it.




Ok maybe I might try simple SnP grinders.

I can stop anytime.

I see each is $18 but the combo is $29. Hard to tell from the pictures if 2 x $18 = $29, in other words if the $29 set contains the same items as the individual $18 listings.

I hope you bought the combo.

I doubt the brand matters all that much, just the blend of four different types. That might seem like a lot, but other brands charge the same or more for much less product.

Ah, interesting.

I can raise my pinkie as I operate the grinder while saying 'I use a special blend of peppercorns...'

Like eneloops, the grinders come pre-charged, so I'll keep the blend on The List.

It has two different units, not a matched set.

I went with the individual units, though probably not tuned and balanced as a set, but the combo was so different, I would have created a disturbance in the Force.

I considered it but my only drill at the moment is a 1/2" 6HP corded unit which needs two hands to minimize torque effects on the wrists, and the 120,000RPM would have likely damaged any vessel connected, so a regrettable pass.

The convenience is for cooking as well as accommodating larger crystals. You do get a better sense of how much salt you're using.
