"Their parent company, StorCentric, has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy after COVID-19 disrupted its business..."

Ummmm... No.

They were gone long before COVID.

...So much for my Retrospect certifications.

::GULP::

I have a few Drobos.

There was a clench in the Force when they filed for Chapter 11 (I believe).

Mine still work well, though two power supplies eventually died when I added high-capacity drives.

I'd almost be tempted to buy one NIB for a backup.

If one of these goes T/U, I'm waste deep in the big muddy.

Drobo has been MIA for at least a year. No new products, no old products available or very little, and spotty tech support. The Drobo group on Facebook has been recommending moving away from Drobo for a very long time. I moved to Synology 1620+ which has far more features. Currently at 72TB of storage after a recent upgrade.

Drobo has been MIA for at least a year...

At least 3 years. Pushing 5 years by some measures.

They started having serious supply-chain problems at least as far back as mid 2018. Most of the techs I work with stopped quoting/recommending new ones for fear that they'd never be able to fill orders.

By end of 2019 -- before COVID -- Amazon had removed their Drobo storefront and it was next to impossible to find new stock.

And their replacement parts site showed zero inventory.

Places like B&H and Adorama would still sometimes get a few units in, but by early 2020, whatever sources they had were dry.

'Thought they were defunct long before the 1st bankruptcy. You have to be able to make something to sell it.

They've been circling the drain for awhile now.

Strongly suggest getting add'l backup resource implemented ASAP.

Good while they lasted, but better plan ahead, so ya don't get left behind.

I'll have to keep that in mind, and maybe think of moving.

Not feeling like there were any features lacking in the Drobosphere, I'll look at Synology line.

Is there an online primer to using a RAID, which I assume the Syno stuff is.

I'm looking at that now.

The 1621+ is $900 without drives.

It does seem like a performance monster compared to the Drobo line.

If B&H does payboo on it, that saves $110+ in tax.

What are the highest capacity drives it's rated for?

The form factor isn't nearly as convenient for me compared to the drobo, but it is what it is.

I had one of their early models and soon moved on to a ReadyNAS. It just seemed like one of those products that didn't live up to the hype. Synology boxes are much better.

I like that the Synology can run apps. My primary app is the plex server. I also run Apache which hosts my little ukulele website and all the little pics I post here. I’m trying to understand dockers so I can run bazarr for better subtitles.

I wonder if the Retrospect group is still a going concern. If so it might be one of the assets they can sell off as they liquidate the holding company. But it hasn't had a solid corporate home since EMC2 acquired Dantz almost 20 years ago.

I moved to Synology many years ago. Never looked back. Much better than the Drobo.

So much Synology love...

I feel that I need a shout-out to QNAP here.

My biggest problem was that the two heavyweights (QNAP and Synology) only made NAS's, which I didn't need. I had a Mini connected to the Drobo, so all I needed was storage. Fortunately, one of QNAP's expansion modules was recommended to me here (Thanks Tiangou). And that's what I got. Works great. Way better than the Drobo. I actually got a second one to back up the first one.
