I met one of my best high school friend last week for pizza and beer. In the course of chatting, I mentioned a weird dream I had had a few nights prior. This exchange followed.

Him: "Hmmm...I never dream."
Me: "You mean you don't remember them?"
Him: "No, I never dream. I've never dreamed. Ever."
Me: "Never?"
Him: "No. My head hits the pillow and 10 minutes later, I'm out."

I proceeded to ramble on about how I wish I could record my weird dreams and play them back because of how weird they often are. Then we went back to eating and drinking. But it got me wondering. Hell, let's make it a poll if you don't mind sharing.

It's unlikely you're friend doesn't dream, unless there's something unusual about his sleep patterns. My understanding is that everyone dreams, and the majority of dreams are not remembered. If you have ideal sleep patterns, where you sleep straight through the night and don't have sleep apnea (and therefore don't wake up frequently) then you're not going to remember your dreams.

All dream; even your dog and cat.

If I don't pro-actively try to recall my dreams within minutes of waking, they are gone.

I thought that I didn't dream much, but lately I have been trying to spend a minute each morning recalling them. They do happen nightly.

Occasionally one will be so vivid, or jarring, that it wakes my up and I can't NOT remember it. But that's rare.

This XKCD is perfect:

"New research in mice suggests that the REM sleep stage also contains a period of “active forgetting.” This most likely occurs to avoid information overload, according to the new study, and the neurons responsible for this forgetting are also the neurons that help control appetite."
