Hard drive showing 90% Full - diet ideas?

MBA M1 1TB drive showing 891GB used.

I went through and deleted probably 50gb of files, emptied trash and the 'available' and 'used' hasn't changed. Then I dumped 8,100 images in Photos. No change.

Is there something more I need to do?

Are there any log or cache files I should look to dump to clear up some more space. I am hesitant to run a "cleaner' program.

Make sure that your backups are up to date.

Then run this in the Terminal:

sudo tmutil thinlocalsnapshots / 1000000000 4

(This is a good command to run if you delete a lot of files and you don't see your drive-capacity increase. It purges storage reserved for local snapshots left behind from Time Machine and OS updates.)

Run DiskInventoryX to see what's hogging your drive. It will show a visual representation of the contents as blocks so that you can see which files or directories are guilty. I often find huge mistakenly saved files that way.

Recent versions of Carbon Copy Cloner can find mysteriously large files, too

I've used CCleaner (mac version here: [www.ccleaner.com]) to clear bloated caches and temp files easily. The caches regrow in the course of standard operation so it needs to be repeated every so often.

IIRC, you have to double delete photos to actually get them to go away.
