Is There Any Recourse For A Seemingly Lost USPS Intl package?

A package shipped to me from Japan arrived in the USA in a few days.

YET For the last month the tracking number gives the same message:

Your item departed our USPS facility in CHICAGO IL INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTER on April 27, 2023 at 3:59 pm. The item is currently in transit to the destination.

Reminder: This item requires a signature for delivery. If you can't sign in person, you can authorize someone else to sign.

Calling, emailing and checking with local office bring no joy at all. I am starting to get very very very worried. Even my local contact says "It should never take this long ..."

I never had USPS lose a package.

I bet dollars to pennies that it will show up. eventually.

Luckily it's just old motorcycle parts and isn't like cancer drugs or a kidney or etc.

You can do lots of stuff, but in my experience nothing helps. Internationally, it can get held up for weeks though, so you never know. I ordered bicycle parts from Ireland once, the package got held up for weeks, and after a billion calls and e-mails found out they had determined the sunglasses I had thrown in the cart to get a discount could have been bought in the USA, so they were reviewing what to do. I ended up receiving the package minus the sunglasses months after ordering. That and a bunch of other things lead me to believe it doesn't pay off to go nuts. They aren't responsive.

To be clear, that's a US Customs issue, and not the doing of the USPS.

I've ordered some small bike parts and a couple of watches from Japan, no issues.

As that's an international distribution center, there are no doubt US Customs agents having access.

My understanding is that all packages go through Customs but not all are held for inspection.

It may even be they go through USPS but some are chosen for Customs inspection.

Your package isn't lost, it's just caught up in international red tape.

I didn't say it was USPS. I actually don't even think it was, in that case. I was just saying it was held up, and there wasn't anything that could actually be done about it. I actually had an instance where I sent something to a business. It was never delivered, but USPS said it was. I insured it, but since it "was delivered", nothing could be done. I spent many hours talking to people, but nothing changed. Hence my opinion that you can do lots of things, but it doesn't often help.
