Any DIY possibilities here? Have you tried and done it with reasonable success?

Best of luck in this endeavor. I never had the patience (or the uncluttered surface space) to learn.

Just to be clear, this is an old bike wheel (I think Schwinn or Raleigh branded bike).

The other thing it needs is to fix an actual deformation of the lip. Since it is steel, I'm thinking that will not be all that difficult.

Not in a long time; I don’t like them and don’t like working on them.

That being said, you can do things to them that you could never do to an alloy rim.

With patience and gentle persuasion you might make it servicable, but you will always feel the damage, at a minimum during braking.

A Schwinn rim might be labeled; be aware that there are some Schwinn rims that are not standard.

Depending on size, you might be able to find a decent set of wheels on Amazon.

Size and gearing?

Post a pic if you want.

If you use a spoke wrench, remember that it is harder to move a steel rim via spoke tension, so beware rounding off the nipples.

Hit each nipple with a little oil (I use Tri Flow).

Let it sit for a while before adjusting, and wipe off any excess.

If you plan to buy a truing stand and spoke wrenches, it might cost more than the cost of a new rim. That can imply the reasons to continue are that it's either borderline irreplaceable or something you really want to learn. As mentioned, proper lubrication on both the holes for the nipples and on the spoke threads can make it easier.

Its only worth doing as much as it entertains you. If you want to ride it much just replace it.

A truing stand is not necessary to true a wheel. Although I own one that I have used for building wheels, I have trued wheels for decades using only my finger resting on the brake pads as a guide. Spoke wrenches are dirt cheap.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I've found that most bike shops are relatively inexpensive for truing wheels compared to how much time and equipment it would take you do it yourself.

for those following along from home, this guy is *way more in depth than I will ever get, but this is pretty much spot on in terms of my situation (his wheel is worse). insane channel, by the way.

I built quite few sets of custom wheels for road and mountain bikes back in the day but I sold all my tools for doing it, truing stand and all. I actually enjoyed it.
