I just noticed that Alsoft finally updated Disk Warrior to 5.3 back in February. It still only fixes HFS+ volumes, but it will run on Silicon Macs. Supposedly Version 6 is in the works and will be able to rebuild APFS volumes. I guess it is still useful if you have HFS+ volumes that need rebuilding.

I composed a State of the Warrior missive to Alsoft last night and trashed it.

Hope there's a v6 headed this way, but I'm no holding my breath.

DW got updated to 5.3.1 last night on my 2012 mini, but have to put it on my M1 MBA.

Did the previous version run on the non-silicon APFS drives, (which still would only repair HFS+ drives)?

One of the things I was going to ask in my email is if there is any increased repair ability in 5 v 4.

To me it looked like the only difference in 5 over 4 was interface, dumbing down the display, maybe making it look superior when it's not.

Finally, I realized if that's case, they likely wouldn't tell me.

Disk Warrior 4 will only run on up to OS 10.10. The previous version of Disk Warrior 5 did run on non-silicon APFS drives.

That's wrong.

DW 4.4 will run on and repair up to Sierra, 10.12.6.

It was replaced by 5.0 but 4 didn't stop working then.

Even if it ran on APFS drives, it would have stopped in Catalina, though there was supposed to be some unsanctioned workaround.

DW 4 stops working from High Sierra on, as I believe their all APFS drives.

DW 5.0 came out in 2018, in a new interface and 64-bit.

DW 5 didn't support APFS until 5.1, and that support was only to run on those drives, but not repair them.

DW 5.1 and later will run on APFS drives and repair any connected HFS+ drive.

I guess I should have said that Alsoft states that DiskWarrior 4 version 4.4 is not compatible with OS X 10.11 or later.

that Alsoft front page is pure fraud...

In BIG BOLD headlines they claim, "Your Mac Contains Your Digital Life. DiskWarrior is Your Lifesaver."

as if it will save a mac produced in the last five years when they know damned well it will not. You've gotta dig down into the reqs before they actually tell you.

I am pretty sure that I had a copy of Disk Warrior at some point. I looked in my gmail, nothing, it must have been so old that I probably purchased the actual CD-ROM back in those days. I didn't see it in years, I probably lost it or gave it away dunno smiley

DiskWarrior was a lifesaver back in the days before APFS+. It repaired drives that Disk Utility, TechTool Pro, etc., either didn't or marked as fixed but still had problems -- I forget its golden arrow of what it fixed, but it did it well. Directory replacement, wasn't it?

It repairs directories exceptionally well, and often more quickly than other apps.

But the repair Preview is the real life-saver.

Other apps can repair directory damage, but if the repair fails that's the end of things.

With DiskWarrior, even if the repair fails, often you can mount the Preview -- a temporary working directory -- for a drive with major errors and clone off of the preview to a new drive to recover most or all of the data.

...

DW is still useful to me. Most of my externals are HFS.

I recently had a RAID fail to mount properly after an extended power outage where my UPS died. DiskWarrior got it back up with no fuss.

From Alsoft.

DiskWarrior 4.4 is Not Compatible with OS X 10.11 El Capitan

DiskWarrior 4 version 4.4 is not compatible with OS X 10.11 or later. To restore complete functionality and to gain additional features, please upgrade to DiskWarrior 5.

They're deliberately low-balling 'Compatible'.

I use it on my 10.12.6 drives (and earlier until I upgraded them to Sierra), with no difference in results than when using DW 5.

DW 5 is supposed to be faster, but I didn't notice any speed improvement, though to be fair, out of habit, I never paid any attention unless it took a very long time.

Recently I had an HFS+ spinner that was connected to my AEBS stop working.

DW 4 took over two hours to repair a 320G spinner, run from a 10.12.6 SSD.

As it turned out there were overlapping extents and DW saved all but 20 files.

DW 5 might have been faster, I don't know.

As to DW 5's 'additional features', I have no idea what they are, beyond the new interface and 64-bit architecture.

I've seen the list, but didn't see a gain after using it a few times, so I use 4.

The graph in 4 is preferable to me over the 'Efficiency' gauge.

In practice the graph may be no more effective or accurate than the gauge, but the latter just lacks resolution, to my liking.

So maybe I'll use 5 for awhile and see if I gain any insight.

Most of the speed boost is on Time Machine backup drives. With all of the hard links to follow, DW4 struggled with the rebuild and could run for days on a TM drive. DW5 seems to have more efficient databases and can grab more memory, wraps it up way more quickly.

...Except that new Macs make APFS Time Machine backups. So... Not as useful as it once was.
