Boeing Starliner grounded indefinitely

NASA and Boeing officials said the first crewed flight of the CST-100 Starliner will be delayed yet again after new issues related to the spacecraft’s parachutes as well as the discovery that much of the tape used in the hardware was flammable.

No timetable for repair or future launch was given but Boeing hinted that it may not be this year. The capsule was to make its first manned flight in late July.

The program is years behind its intended launch.

That would never happen at SpaceX. Musk would just say "Launch it anyway!"

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

'The tape issue involves tape that did fly on the uncrewed test in 2022, and it is commonly used in spaceflight, but teams found that its adhesive posed a flammability risk under certain conditions.

Nappi said there’s hundreds of feet of this tape in the system around Starliner’s wiring systems.'

Odd. This seems like a rookie mistake - why even HAVE such tape at a space ship assembly plant?!

Nope, that's what Gwynne Shotwell would say.

True, but he has reusable rockets that he's launching 2x/week. The cost of the actual capsule is small in comparison. If you have to launches in that frequency it's no big deal. Fuel is maybe $1million, launch services and staff are maybe another million, the consumables on board the booster is maybe $500k. The capsule and second stage might cost a lot, but it's essentially junk as-is at this point. They'd need to disassemble the entire thing to correct it's issues. It's been completely disassembled and reassembled twice now if I remember correctly.

The interior of the Apollo 1 capsule was pretty much covered in Velcro. It only became flammable in oxygen enriched environments. No one thought that would be a problem either.

I have it on good authority that it's Gwynne who keeps Elon from screwing it all up.

She's definitely more level headed and has a filter.
