A discussion over on the For Sale forum brought up the topic of starting points for Mac use.

My first purchased Mac was a used PowerBook 160 running System 7 (7.1, I believe, which was labeled "World Ready" in the paperwork that came with the PowerBook).

I'd used other Macs prior to that; I know I used a few at the computer lab at my college (probably running 4 or 5) and the shared Mac at my first post-college job was running a late version of System 6, and got updated to 7 not long after I started working there in 1992.

The question is more what you started cutting your teeth with in your early days using a Mac. I'm not counting my college days (only wrote a few papers in the lab) or that first work Mac (as I just used it for edits and time entry) -- the first system for me would by System 7. It was on the first Mac I bought and where I really started to learn the machine.

We started using Macs at the office around 1992. The departments tech guy always wanted to stay two operating systems behind, so I would think that put us in OS 5 or 6. My first personal Mac was a G3/233 tower, I'm pretty sure that was at OS7.

The first machine I got at work back in 1989 was a Macintosh IIx running 6.0.1. My first personal Mac ~1991 was a IIsi running 6.0.7.

Wow. We're old!

At Apple, there were pre-release versions floating around on floppies. I think I had 0.7.

agree smiley
I still very clearly remember buying it sometime Summer of 1991; a friend had bought one when they first came out (late 1990) for around $3500. When the price dropped by $1000 around six months later, I jumped right on it; the local retailer even upgraded the stock harddrive from 80MB to 100MB (25% more!).

From what I remember, it came with System 6 installed, but had System 7 included on floppy disks - which I upgraded to fairly quickly.

Judging from the responses thus far, I probably should have put all the pre-System 6 options in the poll. :-)

System 6 on a Mac SE was my first personal machine. I used previous systems on the Mac Pluses at school. And just for kickers, We had Apple 2's in high school. (uh oh, I'm dating myself)

First Mac was an SE 30 in 1991, so probably OS 6.

My first apple was a IIgs, but we had a IIc (I think that was what it was) in the house before that.

That was my first Mac also, and I remember later upgrading to System 3.x at some point, but don't recall any 2.x versions. These were all run off of floppies.

On later 68K Macs that had a hard drive, I ran 6.0.3 and 6.0.5 for long periods.

9 here, but really 10.0 was what had me buying a Mac. 10.0 was so buggy and unreliable I went to 9 on it. I believe it was a Bondi iMac.

System 6 or maybe earlier for my usage but the first Mac I owned had 7.5.2.

Like Diana I started on an Apple ][ so that would be DOS 3.3.

Little bro was hired at AAPL in Dec '79, and went to work at mamaship first biz day of 1980. Was able to gt my hands on two of the original five prototype Lisa machines, thanks to family connection, so basically Mac OS beta-in-training. IOW, pretty darn early.

I don't remember, I was pretty young at the time. I think I remember something pre system 6.

---

First Mac was a Mac Plus. I'm not sure what year. Later upgraded to a IIci which we had for a long time.

My first computer was the Mac SE FDHD [everymac.com]

Based on the introduction date, looks like I purchased that machine right around 1990. Don't exactly recall where my entry point was on the OS though. However, I do recall System 6 and System 7 on it before the day of letting it go.

I also had experience on SE and Plus at office before picking up my SE FDHD

Before Mac, and before Apple (Computer), in the wake of JFK's assassination, I won a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible "Grand Prize" from Longines Symphonette..... Trouble was, I wasn't 18 yet, so they 'substituted' a rather nice table top sized portable radio in its place. Giveaway contest rules were subsequently changed, so that *ALL* advertised prizes must be given away. I couldn't find the Ford Galaxie contest ad, but I was able to find the subsequent contest ad for a Ford Mustang, and an ad for their substituted prize.....

Glad your wife had better luck, and got the right prize.

First Mac my ex and I purchased was a Mac SE FDHD w/ the 20 MB drive. It came with 6.04 loaded as I recall. I had used some Mac Plus's and Mac II's during the 5-6 years before that, but have no recollection of which OS they had on them.

System 6 (probably) at work back in 1988. I had just started and we had a co-op student who was a friend of mine who was going to Drexel Univ. They were one of the first colleges to require students buy a computer, and it had to be a Mac. He had an SE or SE/30 IIRC. Anyway, at the end of his co-op he had to give a presentation, and it was done on his Mac. The managers were suitably impressed and bought Macs for everyone in the group.

First OS on my own Mac was System 7. I remember going to an event at a mall when OS 8 came out. I still have the T-shirt, although it's been relegated to being a "work" shirt so it's pretty well stained and holey.

Me too, in 1983. It used an OS called Basic. Friend of mine and I wrote an inventory program for his business. I used it until 1999 for my business. Just recording sales and costs.

First computer was a Radio Shack back around 1978. I believe it used basic. Then around 1989 moved on to a Mac II with 8 meg of ram and an 80 meg hard drive. I think it was system 6. Still have the Mac II in my basement. I just checked the specs and it says it was 2.0

ProDOS? Ewww, what do I need folders for? And it like ate part of the 144K storage. Plus it was wayyy slower than ProntoDOS (3rd party DOS 3.3 fork).

LOL and once you got any other drive than the original Apple 5.25" floppy, DOS 3.3 was useless and it was clear that ProDOS was an actually useful and extensible system.

6.0.8 that was the system the MAC+ came and went with, SE inherited it, later came to love 8.6 as the best of old Mac OSs.
