Pool maintenance when we're travelling?

we have a trip coming up, we'll be gone several weeks. I wonder how to deal with the pool while we're gone. I am afraid if we don't do anything, we'll come back to a pool full with algae. At the same time, if we leave the pumps running, the filter will probably clog with leaves and burn out the pump.

A friend who goes away even longer (6 weeks) said he shocks the pool with chlorine and then puts a light cover, one that floats on the water with dark side on the inside and reflective on top. I should probably try something like this.

My pool is salt water, his pool is traditional chlorine, not sure if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts? Thanks

I don't like spending the money but I just have a pool company do the maintenance while I'm gone. Things can go south very fast. This has been an expensive year so far with a new salt cell for the hot tub, new pump for the hot tub, and our cleaning robot for the pool failed and needed replacing. Someday I'll join condo life and let someone else do all this pool work.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

What about a timer to run the filter for whatever amount of time you choose, 3 hours a day, for example.

I have the timer, the issues is the leaves will clog the skimmer and the pump filter after a few days. Then what happens if the pump tries to run and the water flow is very low?

I guess we'll hire the pool company for about a month, or I have some good friends a few blocks away that could probably come over and use the pool. Maybe that is the best option.

Mega shock, mega algacide, cover. Sort of a “soft closing”. Reopen when you get back.

Here are a couple of do-it-yourself ideas that might keep the skimmers from getting blocked for a couple of weeks.

I also have a friend who told me he just put a noodle around the skimmer entrance and it worked well. i don't know how he attached the 2 ends to the wall but I could see it working well if you can figure out how to keep it in place.
