Friend having power-up problems, 2014 MacBook Pro

2014 MacBook Pro 13.3” 2.8ghz dual core intel i5 Retina display
Monterey

He provided some answers to a few basic questions I had for him:

Any signs of life pressing power button? EDIT: Clarification added in blue below to replace the strikeout text:

I turned it on for the first time since March. Battery was dead so I had to charge to just get it to power on. It was up and running as usual. I stepped away for a bit, it had gone to sleep, then I was never able to rewake it. Now, no signs of life at all with power button. Before the issue, it just went to sleep and never came back after about a week. Prior to issue occurring, the last time I had used it was back in ~March, seemed fine then. I don’t know about the battery condition. Power supply seems good when connected to the computer - the light on the charger just stays orange, it doesn’t actually finish ever charging the battery.

Anything you have tried so far?

Took it to Apple Store for representative to look at. They did a variety of different keystrokes to try and get it to come life. (My note: Sounded like the Hardware Diagnostics, Safe Mode, etc. I think he also said the rep took the cover off back and did something with battery, don’t know the specifics.) The rep’s conclusion was the logic board appeared to have a problem.

There may be some more details I am missing here. Anything that I can help him try before he declares it a loss? He said the computer had not shown any signs of issues prior to this problematic event.

It seems that the folks at the Apple Store did everything one might do in the ordinary course of troubleshooting.

Reset the SMC (keystrokes). Open it up and look for liquid damage on the logic board or signs of a swollen battery, and try disconnecting/reconnecting the battery.

If they did all that and think it's a bad logic board, they're probably right.

Thanks Tiangou

I will circle back with him to see if they did a SMC reset along with battery disconnect/reconnect - regardless, will repeat that action. Will report back here on how how computer battery looks and whether it responds to the SMC reset.

Some models of MacBook Pros had issues with the DC-in board failing. That connects the MagSafe connector to the logic board. Don't recall if that included the 2014 model.

I had one that would work via AC only if the battery was disconnected.

I had one of that era that only worked (powered up and stayed on) when the battery was replaced and when it was hooked up to power supply. The old battery showed like a million cycles, and was probably interfering with proper boot up.

FWIW I had to have the logic board replaced in my 2015 MBP. It had occasional problems powering on, then just wouldn't. I took it to Rossmann's where they disconnected and reconnected the battery and of course it started for them. A few months later, it would not power on at all, so I took it back, and they found a logic board problem that they could not fix. It cost $300 to replace it. Since then, it's been fine.

Rossmann's is in Austin now, unfortunately.

My life goes smoothly and in regular intervals
