falafel Manhattan

got out of PT the other day felling pretty good and decided to take a long walk from 33rd and fifth to my fave falafel place that I hadn't been to in a number of years.

There are many falafel places in Manhattan. Many are flavorless, expensive filler and/or chains. There's every kind, Israeli, Turkish, Lebanese, Greek, Egyptian.

If you're ever in Manhattan craving a fab falafel, check out Taim down on Waverly west of 7th Ave.
They do have a closer outlet to where I was, but I wanted to walk.
Glad I did. Delicious with "salad", tahini, feta, harissa and a mint lemonade. $18 w/tip.
Then a stop for gelato and finished with a 4.5m walk.

I may to go back tmrw if the weather stays nice.

Kinda along that line, whenever I go to NYC, I get what my cousins refer to as "chicken & rice" (I think it comes with lamb? too) from one of the Mediterranean food carts. What is this thing formally referred to as? I'd like to try and find something similar here in the south. The dish comes in a round aluminum dish with paper cover, and contains meat, rice and salad, all segregated in the dish, with some kind of white sauce and a red sauce.

Is Waverley where Batali had good place? I was there many, many years ago. But my favorite falafel joint is that hole in the wall in MacDougal: I hope it's still there.

Looks like Mamoun's falafel has gone downhill. I don't recall Mamoun's falafel as being crushed flat like that when I regularly went there in college 20ish 30ish years ago.

Link below is a recent review from a month ago. Not a tv show segment. No camera crew. Just a regular customer off the street ordering a falafel sandwich.

I would agree. Mamouns is not what it was. It's gone Ventura.

Sorry to hear that Mamouns has gone downhill but will check out this place the next time I'm in NYC.

Just "chicken and rice". Luckily, we have a great truck a block away. Serious Eats has a page on how to make it for yourself.

close to the R train. cool.
Is there a great Italian bakery in the area, like what's in Carrol Gardens?
Hankering for almond biscotti, sfogliatella & pignoli tart.

There are two old school Bay Ridge bakeries that come to mind:

Jean Danet Bakery

And

Paneantico Bakery

I haven't tried them in a while, but they are long time fixtures in the neighborhood.

From the link, "For the sauce: 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup Greek yogurt,..."
STOP RIGHT THERE. Trust me. There's no Greek yogurt in any halal cart white sauce. It's mainly mayo, sugar, and vinegar.

Agreed that there is no yogurt in that drizzled white garlic sauce. I really like Kenji but I'm surprised that he gets as many things wrong as he does.

Taim is the best falafel I've ever had. Used to work at the Village Vanguard once a month and ALWAYS got dinner there.

I went to Taims LES outlet today on Spring, coz I had some shopping to do at d'Espana.
Inattentive staff of 6 couldn't get a hot falafel in a hot pita out, and couldn't mix the lemonade, nuther.
I'll go back to Waverly. SoHo cool.

A falafel sandwich always leaves me... wanting more.

So I usually get a gyro (lamb) or doner (greasy pork) sandwich with a side of falafel. I get the satisfaction of meat. And a taste of the falafel/tzatziki as a side. I can usually gauge the quality of the restaurant by the quality of their falafel. When I see smashed flat falafel, it makes me wonder if it's pre-fried and sitting around in the kitchen. They smash it flat and flash fry it in the oil to re-heat it when it's ordered. Bleh.

It’s funny that you brought this up today. I've had falafel 3 times in the last couple of weeks - twice in Israel a couple of weeks ago - amazing…, and today in Whitestone, NY at Nana Good Eats..

Taim (Hebrew for “tasty”) is indeed very tasty, but the falafel in Israel is amazing. And Nana is also very, very good.

Well, actually I spoke to the owner of the truck I use. He does a little bit.

I always whip up some extra sauce not using yogurt, since I never have plain in the house. Each truck/place does there own. I cobbled together what I do from a number of recipes and his advice.
Mine is mayo/white vinegar/black pepper/cumin/water to thin as needed. Works.
