“ When Peter Kirkegaard was violently ill for days last week and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, his wife urged them to perform a CT scan.

The results showed a small, slim object pinned in the 60-year-old's small intestine. It was a single wire bristle from a barbecue brush. “

Yeah, pretty scary. What are the chances though? Wouldn't hurt to do a wipe down after the wire brush I guess.

....it was a big news story about a year or so ago......they said to stop using wire bristle brushes for barbeques......

.....the wire bristles can come off, get lodged in food, etc.....then when someone eats it, gets stuck in throat, etc.....

So, what do the non-wire-brush people recommend?

I usually wipe the stainless steel grates with a paper towel soaked in oil.

I use a Cuisinart CCB-505 Power Scour Grill Brush. No bristles, small and works great if you give a quick scrub down while the grill is still hot.

I believe it. I've had a few instances in restaurants when I've found metal in my food.

And cleaning sponges can disintegrate as well. I've started to use non metal bristle brushes exclusively.

Hurts like a bastid...

I picked up a “steam cleaner”… soak a fiber pad in water and then run it over the grate. Or griddle. Seems to work pretty well. The metal brush is going in the recycling.

My brother-in-law uses the wire brush, but then wipes down the grate with half an onion. Works really well!

Doesn't have to be a wire bristle....., one of our friends recently had a similar incident/surgical result w/ a fish bone.
She was not a happy camper.
Thankfully she had better doctors in Beverly Hills than Peter did up in Canada, so her surgery wasn't as disfiguring.
Now we gotta CT scan our fish before BBQ'ing, too, eh?

Everything's better in Beverly Hills, especially those private bank boxes.

I wipe down the grates with a wire brush

Then I wipe saving with a half onion.

I've never seen any wires in the onion, but it should catch any.

Then I throw throw the onion on the coals for more flavor.

Mine is stainless steel I bought at a local welding supply shop. They could have easily seen the wire on an x-ray.

In an x-ray I think it would practically glow.
