Cat is gone
Posted by: mikebw

He got out last Monday, through a door that had not been pulled fully closed. Not the first time that had happened but this time he has not come back. Absolutely no sign of him. Hurts to think about what might have happened.

We've tried all the things. Posted to neighborhood email group, daily walks to find him. I have basically given up hope. I know having a pet is never a financial gain type of situation, but this really sucks for us since we spent several thousand at the emergency vet to save his dumb butt a while back. He was chipped too, but so far no reports of him being found.

He was just so big and fluffy, gentle, and awkward. So different than any other cat I've had before. We're gonna miss him really bad.

I've been through many many cats, but the hardest seems to be when they just go missing.
No closure, and you can't be there with them at the end. Dammit.

You never think today will be the last day you will see your pet, give 'em a hug just in case.

That's a pretty and pretty regal looking guy.

I'm sorry for your loss, it's never easy losing a loved animal.

You've resigned yourself to hiim not returning, and maybe that's a good thing.

I'll hold out hope, though.

Whatta nice lookin cat! Those orange tabbys tend toward insane, but if they aren't too far gone, they can be wonderful cats. Sounds like you got a good one.

This is one really scary aspect of indoor cats - they often don't know what to do or where they are once they get out.

Hope you get him back.

My neighbors actually recovered lost parrots twice via social media. Posting to facebook gets wide attention - nextdoor too.

I'm very sorry. There's still hope he might show up although I agree that its unlikely.

I'm just going to keep repeating this every time I hear about a lost cat - AirTags are _very_ effective at finding escapees. They very rarely go far once they get out.

I'm so sorry. Not knowing is awful. I'm hoping someone has taken him in, thinking he's a stray.

odd. 4 browsers, none show the pic. Anyway, I'm so sorry your friend is MIA. No matter how much of a PITA they are, we can't stand it when they are gone. We have 2 kittens at home, and their endless antics and destruction are a duality of pleasure and pain.

Yet we do it. boink smiley

We once had a cat gone for 12 days. Was locked in a neighbors garage. He ate a few rats and slept a lot we assume.

Oh, I'm so sorry your handsome cat fellow has gone missing. I know all sorts of things could have happened, but I will keep hoping he returns to you. Keep calling, and putting food out at dinnertime, if you can! smiley-signs003

One of my neighbor's many cats was missing for 49 days. My neighbor went around the neighborhood every single morning and evening to call the kitty, who didn't return on her own — it was determined later that she had gotten into her owner's car without being seen and was taken too far away. Signs with very prominent word REWARD posted around at increasing distances finally reached the person who had picked the cat up in a grocery store parking lot. I'm not sure why the rescuer hadn't reported the find to Animal Services nor the local Facebook missing pets page.

Fingers crossed…

I was charged with my landlady's cat while she was gone. Gracie was to be let out in the morning and put back in and fed before dark. Just like clockwork. So, I let Gracie out the last morning and the landlady was due in the afternoon. And Gracie went missing. For a long time…

…And SIX weeks later, she came back.

I never let Gracie out on the "last day" any more.

I am so hopeful your handsome friend returns.

Spread a sheet or blanket or something with your scent on it out on your lawn or front porch. Could help him find his way home.

Why do so many cats have white paws?

A side effect of domestication. The white mutation was initially spontaneous. But it was appealing to humans, and so we selected for it.

I won't say that he's gone. He's just on walkabout. He just hasn't finished.

Let me tell you the story of @#$%&. (Her name was F U B A R, but the forum nanny doesn't like it. smiley-laughing001 )

Nearly 20 years ago, I had a cat named @#$%&. Yes, truly that was her name. Before she came to me, she lived (and was born) with a family of humans with kids, from small children to pre-teens. These kids were NOT civilized--they thought it was great fun to throw a basketball HARD at a small kitten and causing said kitten to fall and have a seizure, breaking bones in the skull in the process--and the parents weren't much better. Anyways, I got the little one and took her home.

She would regularly go outside at the apartments where I lived, sometimes appearing on the roof of the two-story buildings and essentially going wherever she wanted. She came home every day and slept inside; she knew exactly where home was! However, one day she just didn't come home.

That was the day my SIL and her husband (and her 10-12 kids), as well as the BIL, showed up at my 2-bedroom apartment for a "memorial" kind of get-together for the SigOther's mother. @#$%& did NOT like what she found there and immediately decided she wanted out and out NOW. After everyone left, she was no where to be found.

I looked for her everywhere. I called and called for days on end. Nothing. I checked the creek bed, I checked with everyone I saw. A couple of weeks later, I began to hear stories about a cat that someone was feeding tuna, a cat that had appeared about the time that @#$%& disappeared. So I went where the cat was being seen, and called and tried everything I could think of to lure it out--no dice. No cat.

I had pretty much given up, both in trying to find her and in listening late at night for scratching at the door (her favorite way to let me know she was ready to come in).

Then, late one night came a scratching at the door.

Your buddy will come home. Have faith.

Alternatively, if he's like Tux was, as soon as Tux discovered he was outside he immediately tried to find somewhere to hide, from the engine bay of the truck to underneath the mower shed. Tux would let you know where he was as he would talk back when you called him. I just had to go where he hid so I could hear him.

His brother (ME, not "me" but rather as in Windows ME) disappeared during a really cold snap; we think he went into someone's garage and found himself trapped when they closed the garage door. He reappeared several days later when the weather warmed up.

Oh, I might as well pass on my cat searching technique - Go around your block shaking their food container hourly through the night. I once found my guy a couple of doors down - it wasn't until just before dawn that he found his voice. They tend to hunker down. He was VERY happy to be home.

Had a cat named Rocky. He was a fighter. He would disappear for days, weeks, and one time almost four months. Always figured someone was keeping him a few blocks away.

My deepest sympathies.

I posted many years ago when I lost my Spynxie.

I have hope for a safe return and reunion.
My wife have two clipped males that will run out. The older one just sits on the sidewalk, soaking up the sun. The younger one will chase off an alley cat and come back.

She just adopted a young female who likes to sit at an open window. She has zero interest in going outside. She fell out and just stood there as I went to get her.

Wife says "She's not about that life anymore!"

I really appreciate all the kind words!

Even though he has been out and managed to come back before, he is still a fancy boy and has no outdoor skills. I just don't see how he could survive on his own for this long, so maybe, as seems to happen on occasion, someone else is feeding him in the interim.

Your first order of business may be to check with the local city/county agency that picks up animal

carcasses. Sorry to be saying this but you can save yourself much time, worry, and expended effort trying

to find him if he's already beyond your reach forever. I saved a next door neighbor much additional

grief/worry when her worst fears were realized in this way.

I know what you're going through. My first cat disappeared not to be found until some 6/7 years later on a

morning walk ritual when I found his carcass in a street gutter, a car accident victim only a block from his

one-time home. And like you, I loved that animal as did all the neighbors who knew Omar.

Someone had first snatched him of course as he was "at home" for some ten years in my apartment

complex along with his many "companions". It hurt to see where his last moments occurred. But at least I

had final knowledge of what had happened to him.
