This is what happens when our politicians and people ignore the CDC and NIH policies and advice.

And it's also what happens when you eat roadkill.

And it’s also what happens when a country has no immigration policy.

True. Mycobacterium leprae should have to go through the proper channels like everyone else.

That’s right- Florida does not control its borders. The feckless feds do. Ellis Island served a purpose.

Malaria is also on the upswing. Hopefully, it will all settle in The Villages.

Ellis Island served a purpose.

Yes it did including concentrating ill people who were contagious in one very small place.

It's inaccurate to say the U.S. has no immigration policy.

True. But some people won’t be happy until we have machine gun towers along the border.

Leprosy has always been endemic in Florida - in the armadillos!

We're only just noticing because it's spilling over into the human population more than before. Most likely this is a result of habitat disruption, micro-climate changes, and/or people bothering the armadillos. This phenomenon is common at the boundaries between "civilization" and the places that are still wild, and it accounts for many of our recent encounters with "novel" diseases.

This is NOT the result of immigration, uncontrolled or otherwise. Leprosy contagion is not well understood, but it IS known that the bacterium does not spread easily between humans.

Attributing this to immigration is faulty information at best, DIS-information at worst. Just like the belief that the Great Plague was spread in Europe by Jews poisoning the wells.

Leprosy is also now very easily treated and cured. The name scares folks based on history, but it isn't that big of a deal anymore.

The only caveat is that one has to believe in modern medicine.

You lost me, what has this to do with the 159 people (in 2020) who got it? Article expands saying of the 159, 80% were from the "south east" (not specifically FL) and its up 10X over a 10 year span, which means in 2013 there were only 16 people with it. wth does that have to do with immigration?

You want to get behind a huh? endemic (sorta) and immigration? try measels. Super contagious as well. large parts of the midwest have resurged cause they wont vaccinate. it cant at least kill you.

Recently, misinformation about vaccines and their risks has led to reduced rates of vaccination in some communities, making them especially vulnerable to outbreaks.

This is clearly a reference to the great Southern armadillo invasion.

If 30 people get leprosy in a year compared to 15 in the past, I'm not going to worry about it...
