A successful repair to a crack in a plate glass window?

Have a pellet sized crack that has spread to about 8" round. I crazy glued and taped the crack. But is there any way to replace a pane of a double paned window? So far, no one wants to deal with it as I guess it will be a fair amount of work.

Hurts like a bastid...

1. Find local kid w/ baseball.
2. Replace window.
? ? ?

or just skip step #1.
Good luck.

Look in the corner of the glass for manufacturer info, and order a replacement sash. The inert gas that was between the glass panes has likely escaped, and you will likely start to see condensation between the panes.

I had a spontaneous crack develop on a 2x2 double pane window. The manufacturer is out of business so I couldn't order a replacement directly. I could have had one built for me but it was very expensive. So, I took the panel out and carefully removed the cracked pane from the panel (it really just took some heat and a stiff putty knife and 10 min). I then bought a replacement piece of regular glass from Lowe's and had them cut it to size and used clear silicone caulk to put it back on the panel. I'm sure I'm not getting as much efficiency since it doesn't have whatever the gas was but it looks just fine and cost about $15 for the glass.

If you want to just order a new one and install it yourself, here's one place that says they'll make it and ship it to you: [www.fabglassandmirror.com]

Edit: I've also discovered that when the seal fails and I get condensation, I can use a very small glass drill bit to put a small hole at the bottom and another at the top of the inside pane of glass. The sun hits it and the condensation evaporates out. Doing it as soon as the condensation is noticed meant that there was no mineral deposits left on the window, clouding it. Again, I'm probably not getting the efficiency that I had when the windows were new but this is a no-cost fix for condensation.

Michael just gave me an idea.... maybe put a single, thicker pane in, instead of trying to recreate a double pane solution?

Trying to home brew a legit double-pane fix, unless you're in the biz, is near impossible.

Also maybe go w/ Lexan, or other non-glass material for possible better insulation, and/or think about getting film for the entire window.

There is was a company called The Glass Doctor in my area that was able to just replace the double pane insert in one sash of a double hung window. Seemed like a standard thing for them to do.

I will say that the first replacement didn't stay quite in place like it should have, but they were able to come back and fix that for no charge.
