My car uses an SD card for navigation. I would like to make a backup, just in case. I tried to use Disk Utility to make an image and I keep getting errors. It was "cancelled" even though I did not cancel anything.

Things I tried:

Card Locked and Unlocked (the little slider on the side)
Format: read-only, read-write. I did not even try compression.

Any other ideas what I can do? This is an old Mac Mini with Catalina.

I think the car format is MS-DOS, it's only 8 GB

Yeah, I have CCC license, somehow I didn’t think to try it.

If you want to use Terminal, the 'hdiutil' and 'dd' commands each image disks.

Speaking of not thinking; while in the car/MS-DOS vein, I bet some ancient "Disk Copy"-esque utilities would probably work if you could get them to recognize the SD card. Also, I've got some early digicam era, digital media recovery utilities that would probably work. SanDisk, Lexar, etc., and others have recovery utilities that I imagine oughta work. I think you're in pretty good shape. Also #2, any chance of upping the SD card size, for greater nav coverage area? What vintage car are you talking about? Our 2012 has a HDD...., but Acura wants $200 every couple of years for map updates. So we use the phone lady for navigation.

speaking of not thinking - why not drag the files somewhere you want them saved instead of doing a disk image?

Hmm, it is that simple?

If there is a complicated hierarchy or invisible files, then it might not be good enough, but I suspect that it is just needing a place to write files.

Give it a try - get another sd card, format it with MSDOS and copy the files over and see if it works
