Huge Hawaii Wildfires

“ Eyewitnesses described an apocalyptic scene Tuesday in Lahaina town, where residents were forced to jump into the harbor waters to avoid fast-moving flames from a massive brush fire that’s destroyed much of the historic area — and continues to burn.

Residents say an overwhelmed fire force — fighting flames all day amid powerful winds — could do little as flames ripped through the historic community, destroying dozens of homes and businesses in what onlookers believe is the worst natural disaster in Hawaii’s history since Hurricane Iniki.

Acting Gov. Sylvia Luke confirmed that the Hawaii National Guard had been activated to help respond to the sprawling fire crisis, which also includes other raging wildfires. The flames have forced thousands to their homes, and many aren’t sure what they’ll find when they return. “

Terrible.

Does anyone have a number on how many acres have burned?

I've been following this all morning. Maui is one of our favorite escapes from snow. Wildfires and drought have been a big part of their news over the last two years. These are devastating.

The bigger worry is that it's only a matter of time before get "the big one" in my region. The results will likely be similar.

Those video's are unreal. I can't even imagine. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to send assistance.

We honeymooned a few miles from Lahaina, at Napili Kai, 42 years ago, yesterday. We went into Lahaina several times. It was a delightful place. I hate that it's burning.

Just terrible “ The full scope of the devastation in Lahaina isn’t known, but videos on social media show a terrifying wall of flames descending on Front Street in Lahaina and destroying everything in its path. One heartstopping video posted by fleeing residents shows uncontrolled flames in all directions.”

OMG. My inner Hawaiian is crying. Very, very sad.
Been there many, many times. Like Michael, Maui honeymooners here, too.... stayed at the old Maui Prince in Wailea/McKenna area.
Our 81 y.o. friend in Maui (lived on hill above Wailea) just died a couple of nights ago, and is supposed to be cremated in Wailuku shortly....
I'm afraid to ask his widow how the fires are affecting this.
His son and wife's sister just left the island yesterday before the fires were out of control.
Climate crisis is real. Everywhere on the planet.

same here -- we try to go at least once a year to maui -- SIL lives upcountry. She said shes fine, even tho it looked like there was fire near her.

We prefer the Wailea side near Kehi but have stayed in the Ritz farther down in Kaapa. plenty of trips to downtown Lahaina

Good link, btfc!

That amounts to about 1.3% of Canada's land area, to answer gabester's question.

Death toll in Lahaina, Maui, is at 36. With cell service down, I don't see how the count wouldn't go higher.
