just interested in bar soap, and as "natural" as possible, so not as many dyes, fragrances, etc.

I used to get Irish Spring (green) at Costco because it was relatively cheap.

They stopped carrying it and have some very bland beige Kirkland brand, so I get that now.

Little to no dye, very faint smell that doesn't qualify as a fragrance.

I have no idea on the price, it was a bunch of bars, and I don't like Dove.

Dove is the Irish Spring replacement at one of the 'local' Costcos, and I don't like it.

More fragrance than Kirkland Beige and I can't meld an old bar with a new.

Dove, Costco, but has fragrance. The Doves can be melded but sometimes the bars are persnickety.

Dial Gold for most of the time. There was a time when I had skin problems, used Basis soap during that period at the recommendation of my dermatologist.

I went through this more than a year and a half ago. After trying several of the suggestions, I am back to my old faithful Yardley English Lavender. I wouldn't call it natural or fragrance-free, but I'll stick with it. About a buck a bar on sale.

Kirk's, fragrance free version. It is plant based, and does a great job regardless of water hardness.

A few years back I moved my allegiance from Safeguard to Coast. Bar soap, other than "beauty bars," has become harder and harder to find, so I tend to buy two dozen when I find it in some large grocery. Because I accidentally have Prime this month, I took the opportunity to lay in a supply without having to go on a brick & mortar search.

Tone was my go to for as long as it lasted..... still have a few bars left that I'm rationing for their duration. Had I known Tone was gonna vanish for good during the pandemic, I woulda stockpiled a multi-lifetime supply. In the meantime, the Dial glycerin based flavors are palatable, and some of Dove's non-potent, and Men's + flavors are holding their own. In the non-bar department, Mrs. Buzz mixes in Sebamed body wash.

Bring back Tone bar soap! Please! Pretty please!

I switched to Dr. Bronner's liquid decades ago. Use it with a natural sea sponge. I've used the bar type, too. I notice a difference between Dr Bronner's and other brands.

ETA: I should say that I use the baby unscented. I find the scented too strong

I echo the recommendation for Dr Bronner's castile peppermint soap, which you can find at most large grocers or the usual online retailers. I read a review somewhere that described it as "a song on your balls." The bar is typically stronger than the liquid, and it is quite tingly.

Bronner's user here as well. Best soap I've ever found by far. Unscented bar soap in shower and bathroom sink. Diluted 5-to-1 liquid unscented version in guest bathroom and kitchen. Buy a ton of the bar soap (enough for a year or more) whenever Whole Foods has a sale on them for $2/$2.50.

FYI, I could be mistaken, but I think you need to have an Amazon Prime account to take advantage of the discount whenever it's there (in which case you open your Whole Foods app on your phone and scan the QR code during checkout).

Indeed. At that price, I'd definitely give it a shot. At the $4.99/bar I see it listed at most places, it's a hard pass.

This is why I switched from Ivory to Dove some three decades ago. Dove is the only bar soap I’ve used that does not leave my skin feeling dried out.

It is also the only thing I’ve used to wash my face in all those years. Given that fact, combined with how frequently I am told I look younger than my years, I feel Dove gets some of the credit for that.

It is what it is.

I started out with the Yardley Lavender early in my life, then then switched to Ivory, then Dove. Had to ditch them when I noticed the Ivory was drying out my skin too much (and I think leaving a residue). The Dove I stopped when I noticed it starting to leave a residue. We supply Dove body wash in our guest bathrooms however, and people seem to like it. But for personal use it's Dr. Bronners's and I haven't looked back.

I have been using the Dial 'yellow' soap my whole life. I just discovered Duke Cannon 'victory' and consider it almost life changing.

Duke Cannon is kinda of a manly man purveyor of soaps, body wash and beard balm.

Warning - the call the soap size "big ass brick" because they are nearly as big as a brick. I have also gone from one Dial every 6 weeks to one of these for about 8 months.

I highly recommend and I seldom recommend stuff.

I got that BAB for father's day with some other stuff.

I use Dove in the shaving kit, which is used only at the gym 2-3 times a week. Usually get the sensitive skin version.

At home, I use a liquid body wash.

Since the lockdown, I don't shower daily like I used to.

I find a sponge bath is more than enough given that I work a desk job.

Can be used to shave (in the shower) in a pinch.

Palestinian olive oil bar soap from eBay.

Body wash - a gel base meant for people to customize. It works, feels great, is truly unscented (a big priority for us), and is very inexpensive.

Hi everyone,

I’m a big believer in bar soap and bar shampoo/conditioner. For soap, I switch between four different types primarily. My primary are various Big Ass Bricks of soap from Duke Cannon, Dove Sensitive, a scent or three from Dr Squatch and a scent or two from Rad Soap Company. Occasionally, I’ll use a bar from Dr Bronners, Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements and other companies. Typically, though, my primary soaps are from Duke Cannon.

My favorites from Duke Cannon are Gunsmoke and Leaf and Leather. Duke Cannon isn’t joking then they say the bars are Big Ass Bricks of soap. The bars are large. So, I bring them to the office and use our band saw to cut each brick into three smaller pieces. This way, I can swap amongst the scents easily.

I use one small bar from Duke Cannon. Once it becomes too small to use, I replace it with a bar from Dove. Once that is too small to use, I replace it with another small bar from Duke Cannon. I switch to a different bar after that one runs out. You get the idea. I rarely use the same “scent” twice in a row.

I tried Ivory but it dried out my skin way too much. “pure” it might be but very drying and irritating, too. Won’t go near it.

Here are links to some of my favorite soaps:

[dukecannon.com]

Avoid the pumpkin spice soap from Duke Cannon. Definitely not my kind of scent. Makes me smell like dessert and not in the good sense of the word.

[kirkssoap.com]

I like the Man Up soap.

[drsquatch.com]

Fresh Falls and Pine Tar, in particular, are very good.

[phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com]

I like Phoenix’s Boomtown Bar. Several of the other flavors are solid, too.

None of the bars from Rad, Phoenix or Dr Squatch, or Dove (or most commercially available bars) are as large as the Duke Cannon Big Ass Bricks of soap. The bars from Dr Squatch last the shortest amount of time. 1/3 of a bar from Duke Cannon outlasts a full bar from Dr Squatch. Still, Dr Squatch is good soap.

Bar soaps from Bath and Bodyworks aren’t too bad.

I stick a SoapStandle onto the bottom of a given bar of soap:

The SoapStandle elevates the bar, allowing it to try properly between uses.

I also use bar shampoo. I tried a Duke Cannon Shampoo Puck first and was hooked on the concept.

[dukecannon.com]

From Duke Cannon, I like the Field Mint and Gold Rush Fever flavors more than the Barrel Char #004.

I also use bars from Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements:

[phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com]

My favorite from Phoenix is The Wow Signal 2020 Conditioning Shampoo Puck

The shampoo pucks last a _very_ long time. This is especially true if you have short hair. I’ve been using the same puck from Duke Cannon nearly two years now and I’m barely a third of the way through it. The pucks from Phoenix don’t last as long as the pucks from Duke Cannon. Either will last much longer than a typical plastic bottle of shampoo.

I use SoapStandles on the bottom of the shampoo pucks for the same reason I slap’em on the bottom of soap.

Robert

I make my own. I'm sure you can find a soapmaker local to you (we're everywhere!) who makes great soap but it might take a little experimentation to find the one making a bar that works perfectly for your particular water and skin. However, there's no way a small-batch soapmaker can ever sell for the super low prices of the mass-produced soap you all are talking about above.

Maybe you'd like to try a fun hobby and start making your own? It's really easy to get started, although it's also easy to fall down a deep rabbit hole of wanting more exotic oils, more fancy molds, more high-end fragrances....
But you can end up with the sort of soap that suits your family best, because you tailored it for your own needs.

I love the process, and always feel like my kitchen is really the potions lab at Hogwarts (and I would love to have this much space for all the ingredients I have/want to have/can't help buying even though there is no more room....
