The Atari 2600 Is Back, Backward Compatible, And It’s Got Wood

....The Atari 2600–the console that shook the world in the late 70s and early 80s–is back. Atari, in partnership with PLAION, has today unveiled a “modern-day, faithful recreation” of the console that both dominated the North American market and led to the video game crash of 1983.

The remake, which takes its visual inspiration from the four-switch CX2600-A model from 1980, will launch worldwide on November 17 and is now available to pre-order for $129.99 (€119.99 / £99.99).

Purists are thoroughly catered to, thanks to the inclusion of the Atari 2600+’s CX40+, “recreated with the same size and layout as the original 2600 Joystick Controller for that added touch of nostalgia.”

Much like its predecessor, it’s got wood–that natural panel is as authentic as it gets. To further push the spirit of the original Atari 2600, it’s also backward compatible with both 2600 and 7800 games.

The Atari 2600+ will launch with ten classic games from the console’s repertoire, and each has “been created using modern technology to authentically replicate the original four-switch Atari 2600 Video Game System.”

The Atari 2600+ also builds on the original machine with features including a HDMI output, USB power, plus multiple screen resolutions. If you want to go even deeper into the Atari 2600 rebirth, PLAION has recreated the twisty CX-30 Paddle Controller, which you can get for $24.99 (€22.99 / £19.99), or ith its own 4-in-1 multi-game cartridge–titles as yet unannounced–for $39.99 (€34.99 / £29.99).

Other launch titles have been revealed, including cartridges for Berzerk Enhanced Edition and Mr Run and Jump.

Space Invaders and Pac-Man were both licensed games, the current company named Atari (no affiliation with the original business) probably doesn't have the rights.

Throw in a $40 Harmony cartridge and you could play every Atari game ever made.

Not that anybody would play most of them twice.

What a joke - $130 for a console with 10 games and 1 wired joystick? The Atari 2600 retro console jumped the shark.

A few years ago I got a Atari Flashback 9 Gold, which also has the console with HDMI output, 120 games, an SD card slot so you can run more 2600 games and 2 wireless joysticks for about $75. There's also 2 wired joystick jacks which you can plug joysticks into or modified paddles.

The 50th edition Atari Flashback which was released last year has 130 games, but they dropped the SD card slot and it has 2 wired joysticks and wired paddles.

Okay, maybe Pitfall...


Geeeze, I LOVED Pitfall.

It was one of my favorite games on that console.

Choplifter! was another favorite, but I think I had that on a floppy for my Atari 800XL or 1200XL and floppy drive.

That drive was pretty flaky, but there were stretches where it was flawless and I'd spend hours with it.

I've always been a lightweight gamer, er- game player- but I loved the hand full that got played.

I think I still have some Myst 3 1/2" floppies that never got used.

I'm hitting up used game stores and pawn shops before those old carts go up in value now that you can get a modern console to use them with.
