Moving music from iTunes on old iMac to iTu-oops! I mean Music on MBP M1 Pro
Posted by: DP

Been moving slowly but surely from my late '12 iMac running Mojave (10.14.6) to my MBP M1 Pro running Monterrey (12.6.6) and I want to move my music to the MBP.

What is the procedure? I'm not on iCloud so I have to do it "mechanically", I presume...

How is it organized now?
I have mine in a folder labeled Apple Lossless CDs. Then each group/ind is in a folder and each album is in a folder by Album Name with individual songs listed in order.

Then just move the Apple CDs folder. Depending on your amount of music. You may have to split up and move more than one time.

I also have one folder in the Apple folder named Compilations for holding Greatest Hits and other CDs named like AM GOLD 1966.

Easy to move and keep in order.

Songs are just on iTunes playlists. I have never put them into folders. I have no idea how to get them onto folders from iTunes or where I should put them! confused smiley

I still have an older machine and found that I hate Music, so I simply kept all of my music on iTunes on the older machine.

Same. On my mobile devices, I use Cesium to avoid the dreadful Music app interface. I stick with iTunes on my Macs. I don't trust Music not to muck up everything. I put too many hours into ripping CDs and fixing the horrible track names that come in from the database sources to risk having my library mangled.

Open iTunes. In the top left hand corner is the App Name "iTunes."

Select that and then select Preferences. Run through all the Preferences and see what will help you the most.

I am running iTunes 12.9.5.5 on Mohave 10.14.6

In the Preferences, there is a place where you can select where your iTunes volume resides. See if you have a name there already?

Replace the contents of the Music folder in your Home folder with the contents of the Music folder from your old Home folder.

(Assumes that you haven’t done anything with the Music app on the new Mac yet and there’s nothing of any importance in the Music folder on the new Mac.)

The critical thing to do is to hold down the option key and then you can select your old iTunes library for Apple Music app.

This is just not intuitive at all.

Hold the option key, then while holding it launch iTunes, IIRC.

posted recently, Music under Monty blows serious monkey balls.

iTunes 12.9.5 on Monty is very nearly normal with Retroactive as described above.

I used the option key method above when I 1st moved from my '13 MBA to the current '18 mini.
Worked fine. My media is all on a MP3,1 that is on a 5 port switch.
iTunes at home and Emby when away.
