+/- 1988, on my birthday, I was driving past Chico Hot Springs, MT (a little south of Livingston) and decided to have a birthday beer.

I was surprised to find the bar completely packed, and had to stand out front.

I quickly realized that Jimmy Buffett and one of his band members was sitting in with a popular Montana band.

I heard Buffett do three of his songs with the band, I guess they did five.

I later heard that he did a second set, don’t know if that is correct.

Sad indeed. I'm far from a Parrothead, but I did like most of his hits. A particular favorite is "Come Monday"

Along with many fans there are people on my FB feed who knew him. Universally loved. The good, fun guy image was not faked.

Just last week I had mentioned to one of my guitar students that I thought Margaritaville would be a fun tune for him to work on.

RIP

This guy genuinely was passionate about making people feel happy. Bringing "good vibe" people together. He never just took anybody's money either. His projects provided tremendous value. We need people like him.

Fk’n skin cancer….. burns me up seeing my light skinned brothers and sisters roasting themselves in the sun using no protection! As dark skinned as I am, I still wear sunblock during any outdoor activity…..been doing that since my teen years when I was going to college in Florida.

I met him twice... He was really nice to everyone, both times when he was shooting photos for an album cover on, or around, one of the boats I was working on at the time.

I only knew one of his songs, and when it came on the radio, I changed stations to find some Led Zep, or Hendrix, etc.

Give his first live album a try. Buffett's studio stuff was all too often hampered by schmaltzy Seventies production, but he was a consistent concert sellout for decades for a reason: His material is generally a lot better when pared down to a sharp five-piece rock band with a harmonica and/or steel drum added in.

Found this almost by accident last night. I get so used to attributing good recording to the expertise of high-end producers and studios. This was Buffet and his guitar in the guest seat with Letterman, and his performance was stellar. Yeah, i guess some credit goes to Letterman's sound crew, but still...

That's fantastic, thank you.

From so long ago, Letterman was still funny!
